pause for moment...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/kent/2952707.stm

I'm not good at words, so please just help me pray for all concerned.

Please pause for a moment, and think about what damage we could do...

Did you really do a thorough pre-flight before that "just one more flight before it gets dark" last night?

Do you prove it's safe to fly or disprove that it's not safe to fly?

Just saw the URL on a Swedish heli forum.

Sad to see that it happend....

Poor girl and her family, and the pilots feelings must be horrible..

Very tragic!

I read somewhere in a mag that a teen was killed in Europe by one of the F3J winch spikes flying out of the ground and hitting him in the back of the head, killing him instantly. -Steve

Tragic. No parent should out-live their child under any circumstances. The other tragedy is the pilot, no doubt a good man who will re-live this disaster every day for the rest of his life. Prayers for all concerned.

Perhaps planks should have starter cones made of silicone that can compress on impact shielding the prop bolt, not hard ones shaped like bullets and made of thin plastic. Just a thought.

By comparison, helis have no single point of impact, engines are in the middle, the majority are flown at lower altitudes many only ever in practice hover, they don't tend to nose-dive from 400ft sharp-end first dead stick or otherwise at 100mph + and they are generally noisy and alarming giving plenty more warning of trouble.

Freak and thankfully rare accidents asside, the good news is that this is just about the most caring, thinking and responsible hobby on planet earth. I have never come across anyone in this hobby who thought it was cool to fly RC like an idiot and I've found many who take safety concerns to such an extreme where I've wondered if they were enjoying themselves at all. Paradoxically, there's plenty of evidence of people who think it's cool to drive like an idiot - with consequences to match.

Happy flying folks!

Not that I have heard anything about that. But I must wonder. Why would anyone set a failsafe to go to full throttle? Of course it (if indeed it did happen) was probably a mistake on the pilots behalf (the programing). But it still seems stupid to me. Just goes to show, check it, check it, and oh yeah, check it again. Saftey is paramount.
[QUOTE] what is a fail safe?

You need a PCM TX/RX combination to use failsafe. You can program it to do various things if the receiver loses signal, including cutting the throttle.

hey cool, that sounds safe but what if you can't get to the transmitter and the heli still gets the signal?

at the AMPS field

back when I was learning to fly my rc plane, I was checking all the linkages at the pits when I heard the whining of an airplane sounding louder and louder. I was so lucky, the plane missed me by a foot and crashed right next to me, A piece of the engine and a tank did hit me which burned and left a bruise on me for a while. Suprisingly the flyer didn't even apologize, only laughed. I was pretty disgusted and shocked.

i read somewhere that it was calculated what a rotor strike is like. It was found that, if you could find a guy who could throw a baseball at 80km/h, get him to hold a 8m rod and hit you on the head as hard as he can. that's what its like.... ouch.

Your way off on that calculation.......

We figured out that a sixty size with 680 rotor diameter spinning at rounded 1800 rpm per minute is roughly 280 mph.

It would rip your arm off.

and thats from the first hit. The other would follow within 1/1000 th of a second after tearing through the rib cage and probably penetrating the lung.

You would be lucky to live for 10 minutes after it.

Fly safe, or someone wont get hurt......they will die.

We had an incident no too long ago at our club where a member was testing out his .30 size heli when the throttle stuck. He decided to try and reach under the rotor and attempt to disconnect the fuel line. The heli pitched toward him, and caught him on the arm.

At the time, I was flying, and i heard a loud TWACK, and suddenly, chunks of rotor were scattered all over the field. Oddly enough, the stricken flyer never even made a sound, he just calmly walked over to us, and politely stated "I think my arm is broken, could you drive me to the hospital?"

later that day, we learned he had frctured is arm in 3 places, recieved 38 stitches, reconstructive neurosurgery, and severed nearly all the ligaments in his wrist. The doctors had to transplant nerves and veins from his leg, to his arm. Today, he admits it was a very stupid thing to have done. He recovered with only minor sideeffects.

Now consider this- when he got nailed, he was wearing a layered clothing and a leather Harley Davidson Biker jacket, and he nearly lost his arm. The amount of focused energy contained in a helicopter blade is tremendous, whenever I look at my concept 30, I cringe.

Yep, my point extended.

Now a 90 size. Call the herse.

We got a guy at the field , theres one in every crowd, that flies without a fear of the machine. Keep in mind fear to crash and fear of the heli are 2 different things. Always maintain the respect for others and yourself. But he flies over his head. Over his head and actually over his head. I wont be suprised when I get to the field one day and hes or somone there has been decapitated.

A model helicopter is not , is not ....a toy.

i watched a 24 inch carbon prop take my friends arm off with a DA 50 about 3 months ago. he was medivac in less than 15 mins, and lost 60% of his blood. they were able to save the arm, and he was flying his raptor 30 only 4 weeks after the accident. truly amazing.

Just recently my friend was hit by a raptor 30 with 10 minute old carbon fiber blades. He was flying an airplane and our friend was flying the raptor. They were the only 2 people at the field other than my friends wife. (if she wouldn't have been their he probably wouldn't have made it.) From what I gather something happened to the tail rotor on the rappy, the pilot yelled but are friend looked up just in time for the first blade to hit him in the chin, in which it virtually cut his jaw off. The blades also hit the top of his head, his back, the juglar vein, his thyroid, and im not sure what all else. His wife was a jewel, while the guy that hit him was in shock and couldn't do much of anything she got her husband, (who looked like Jason on the halloween movies just got done with him, not hardly a spot on his body wasn't covered with blood), to the local fire dept and got him professional help with in 10 minutes, probably saving his life. Unbelievably my friend is doing very well with only a small spot in his lip that has no feeling. Thank God!

Im not sure how my friend would take me telling you all this story but I feel its imperative after seeing with my own crying eyes what these machines will do to you if it hits you or anyone else.

PLEASE, PLEASE, BE CAREFUL FOLKS!!
