I witnessed two accidents at a two different fields , one was my french diplomat friend who almost lost his fingers , the tail blades mangled his hand, the other a girl was learning to hover and the heli slid back on her at the knees and the blades sliced down thru both her shin bones . she lost alot of blood then . friends at the field put her in the car and immediately rush her to the local hospital , she was very lucky .

we had a young wife watching her husband fly his gas xcell at a local field. she was sitting in a lawn chair reading a book. the gasser ended up in her lap. ambulance came and took her away.

It's a good safety principle to only have onlookers who actually onlook, I would not like to spend a day at a demo reading a book like nothing was going to fall out of the sky...

I (and many others) saw Ray St. Onge at a Bakersfield Fun fly in the 92-93 time frame or so get his hat knocked off his head. Did not touch his scalp, but sliced his hat. Another pilots heli went out of control while he was flying. He kept right on flying, while my heart was in my mouth.

Wayne,

I was involved with that incident. The heli that went out of control was an Xcell custom. That was its first flight and a friend and me were setting it up for a fellow modeler. Crash investigation revealed that the RX battery lost a cell. That really surprised us as we cycled the battery the night before and load checked it prior to that flight.

The few seconds of flight it had were terrifying to say the least. We were running and yelling as fast as we could at Ray but he was in the zone and did not hear us. When the heli came down on him I thought he was dead for sure. The main blades just missed his head and cut his baseball cap in half. The machine crashed right beside him at his feet. Incredibly, Ray continued to fly his machine for a few seconds and landed it as if nothing even happened.

It was a very lucky day for everyone involved and I think Ray still has that baseball cap as a reminder of how close he came that day.

Still shakes me up when I think about it.

Flying for 5 years now I have gotten quite radical in flight. Controlled , but radical. I am no Curtis or Bob Johnston or even middle liners, but I tend to hold my own. If I have noticed one thing more than anything is my appreciation for a very dangerous helicopter. I always tend to fly as far as possible away from people and never over my own head. Crashes are best enjoyed( if you will) from a distance. I too have heard of Adam and although I never new him he is always passing through my mind when I fly. At first entry into this hobby , it was rough , mechanical falures left and right , all due to the lack of attention and impatiently wanting to fly. But now, in the later years , the only problems that I really have are servo and parts failure and those are few and far between.

So in words , always keep Adam in mind as a safety issue. If we leared anything from his loss its not to be careless.

I agree with Caliber-1 and keep the heli far away from yourself and others is the best safety option to do..

My motto is this..Fly...Rebuild...Fly

Well, I hope everyone here is learning something from this. These machine are very dangerous and could kill someone. SO BE SAFE WHEN YOU FLY

Just want to tell u a little story (very little ) right one day i was flying my heli then tryed to do nose in a crashed it on its side i had to change a little plastic arm and the flybar when i took the paddles off they were fine. when i put them back on i noticed that the paddles wasent staying on very well kept coming off very easy. Like me dad thinks he knows it all he said put some super glue in it and just screw it on. I dident want to do it like a twat he is he went mad so i said ok then fine. I said to my dad if that comes off its goner hurt if some 1 gets hit with it. He said NOO!! and he watched on a stool out side about 4 feet away. While my m8 was lying on the grass and his head was about the same hight as the paddles. started my baby up yep running fine paddles staying on untill i gave it throttle. It was getting really light on the skids and all of a suddon whammm in less than a second it shot straight across my m8s face probley missing him about 10 cm from his face and hit the fence. My dad coudlent belive how fast it went.

If some think doesent go on right or u dont like it change it. like the paddles i would have changed it if it wasent for my dad .

But good job no one got hurt.

always take care people

It's just a matter of time before either loss of life or limb occurs. These things are getting CRAZY with 91's and graphite blades. I saw one cut like BUTTER through a piece of 4" PVC the other day.

We'll ALL know when one happens though because the AMA fees will go up to about $400 / year if it doesn't put them out of business altogether.

Keep the flight path left to right is what I do.

I won't say that it can't, but chopping through a human limb is harder than it may seem. Butchers keep very sharp knives for a reason.. Muscle, skin and even bones flex, allowing them to absorb and distribute some of the force. This distribution of force is illustrated by the injuries we have seen that leave very large, even huge bruises. Solid objects will break more easily than tissue because they don't distribute the force well.

Before I get flamed, here is what I did NOT say: Helicopters aren't dangerous, in fact they are completely safe. The rotating blades have virtually no chance of injuring you or someone else. The idea that they have any chance of cutting, breaking bones or even killing you is ludicrous!

I bet any 60 or 90 running at speed and hitting straight on, would whack your arm clean off (maybe not if your name is Blutto). Given the stored energy in the disk, I firmly believe it to be easily lethal if it hits the right spot. Thankful that it has not happened.

Be careful guys, and stick your neck out and talk to people who you think are being unsafe. Tell them in a way that will make a difference.

Death by copter - nasty. there are pictures on Rotten.com of a navy guy hit by a real copter - not pretty (not for the faint hearted!)

Luckily I didn't die - but my foot hurt for a while after i deliberatly stuck it into the blades of my "out of control - screaming its ball off" Concept 30 after i lost radio contact with it during a engine test on my driveway....

I lost radio contact with the 'copter, the revs started to build and it was about to lift off (in very close proximity to 2 mercedes cars) i did the only thing i could to bring it down - i stuck my foot into the blades! thank god for my Nike Air thick soles.... as i hoped around on one leg - i watched as my concept 30 thrashed its self to peices on my driveway, finally coming to rest at full throttle in a tangled pile of bits. Carbon blades, carbon boom - all shattered, all the gears stripped, and the main shaft looking remarkably like a banana.... R.I.P concept 30.... Not to worry though foot got better, and i bought a new JR Ergo .46 - did me a favour really!

seriously though - these aint toys! i always worry when im tracking up my copter that one of the blades will come off and hit me in the face - just my luck!

woah.. rotten.com- those pictures aren't real are they?? Theres no place for these kinds of images over the net.. I think it should be against the law to post VERY disturbing images- only the officials or something should have these- the public should not see.

Anyone who has participated in a "story passing" exercise knows how distorted the story gets by the time it reaches the last participant. Urban ledgend knows no bounds.

I know I have a huge amount of respect for those spinning blades and always use a great deal of caution when operating my heli.

A good example is a guy in our club who was "checking his cyclic operation. He was holding the tail boom with his right hand to prevent the heli from tipping as he checked the cyclic operation. He told me that he checked forward cyclic, left cyclic, right cyclic, and as he started into aft cyclic he thought; "I shouldn't be doing this" just as the tip of the rotor blade hit the top of his right wrist. 30 some odd stitches later he realized what a dumb idea it was to check his cyclic by holding the heli.

Safety should never be over looked.
