Thunder Tiger Raptors 30-90 - Imperio > Raptor 60 Gear Mesh Question

Dumb newbie question.

I have the main gear installed and when I turn the rotor shaft to test the mesh, I hear a knocking or clicking sound that appears to be coming from the main gear/pinion gear sub assembly. Other than the sound it makes, the gears appear to be smooth. I'm just wondering if this is normal. I'm concerned that I may not have the mesh set correctly. If it isn't set right, you think it's too loose or too tight? I used the paper test method to see if the paper tears when it goes through the gears and it didn't. From the manual, it looks like I can loosen some screws to move the pinion gear assembly back and forth to play with it but don't want to do this obviously if I don't have to. I'm mainly just interested to see if any one else has run into this. Thanks for the help.

No Question is a dumb question

Kovar,

When I built my Rap60, I remember the gear just being tight. I used a strip of paper to shim the mesh also. That went away and everything was smooth after I ran it on the ground. Hope this helps.

Just Finished Building a Rap60

Kovar,

I have just yesterday finished building a Raptor 60.

You are right in that the main gear sub assembly is very tight and can make some knocking noises, in fact mine was so tight on the clutch, I could not turn the rotors without it trying to turn the engine over.

I ran the engine (OS61 SX - WC) last night at tick over and while holding the rotor head gave it a few extra revs for about 10 or so seconds, that has now bedded in the main gear and clutch and everything runs smoothly now.

I would suspect that once it has been run for the first time it will bed itself in and smooth out, probably not worth worrying about unless it is still noisy after its first run.

I hope this is of use to you.

Regards,

Peter.

Thanks guys! Yeah I did the paper method too. I guess I was just too concerned that things were tight. I called my local LHS to see thier thoughts and they said that a little noise in the beginning is normal, just to make sure that it wasn't too loose and to also make sure that the engine clutch can turn freely. I mounted the engine and clutch and engine the other night. Man I can't wait to get this thing started. Thanks for the help!

Happy flying!
