3rd time out today taking pictures. Got some very good ones. I don't think I want to go to work anymore! At least during good photo days.

I had an even mix of in focus and out of focus shots. The camera was set to infinity for focus and all the shots were 100 + feet. It was a sunny, windless day and I had the shutter speed locked in at 1/500th of a second. I took some photos when the heli was ascending, some when desending and some when in slow forward flight. I did not keep track of what was taken when, but I suspect that was the only varient that might account for blurred vs in focus.

On my later flight, I had snapped some photos in focus at 1/40th and 1/60th of a second (it was getting dark, cam set to auto everything) and they were not blurred...so I think my mechanical setup is not creating vibration induced blur.

Any techniques that you experienced photographers can share as to when to snap the photo? On the way up, on the way down, hold steady hover?

Hi,
I am operating my own design Vario Petrol Mechanics photo heli. I had similar experiences with my Coolpix 5400. On rigid mount with shock absorbing dampers(r/c car type) 5 out of 10 shots would come out blurred. I thought there was something wrong with focusing system. Later I put the camera in an enclosure lined with 1/2" soft foam on the same mount. I still get blurry pictures but ratio is like 2 out of 10. Shutter speed does not seem to matter. Where as on my 35mm SLR Pentax MZM (same heli), I can go down to 1/500 on smooth days. But in turbulent air I never go below 1/1000. This way I get sharp focused pictures 10 out of 10 everytime. I guess some digital cameras have delicate focusing. there is no such thing as manual focus on non SLR digitals. That is what I think.
Cheers,
Ahmet

Wrongo! The Sony DSC-V1 has a manual focus mode. Just set it to infinity and go fly! It also shoots quicker that way because it doesn't have to try to get the shot in focus first.

I believe my problem was trying to take picture when moving. All my shots where I am sure I was in a hover were nicely focused. Including shots where I had only 1/40th second shutter speed. Pretty simple concept really. You wouldn't expect to get an in focus picture if you held the camera at arms length and moved it up and down as you snapped pictures. Guess I need to practice high altitude hovers...or at least slower ascents and decents.
Thanks for the advice...I will update if whether my theory holds true...

This shot was 1/40th second shutter, slight blur as might be expected, but was in a hover. Mechanical vibration, I would think, would cause focus problems in all shots. Shot composition courtesy of my 10 year old.
