Miniature Aircraft Nitro/Gas Helicopters > Which gear ratio should I get ?

Hi!

I live 9000 feet ASL (3000 feet higher than Colorado) and I'm about to get myself a Fury Expert

I already have an OS 91 and I know everyone suggests the 8.18 gear ratio for this engine. The thing nobody ever takes into account is that at 9000 feet of elevation, the engine performance is really poor unlike at sea level. I know there is much less drag at this height therefore I can use higher pitches, but that will NOT solve the problem at all. I know because I was never able to 3D my Concept VR w/ OS 50 at this height, but it did pretty well at sea level. I was using +/- 12 degrees of pitch when the manual states not to exceed +9 / -8.

BTW, RC engines are usually run very lean at this altitude !!

With the above in mind, which gear ratio should I go for out of the 3 available ones ? .. 8.18, 8.45, or 9.3 one ?
