Just wondering how many flights are expected from the GP 3300 Nickel Metal packs.

I am going to be using it with the Airfoil Voyager 50 E machine.

Also, do you charge the packs right after a flight or let them cool down for a period of time, how long to you usually let them them cool?

thanks!

ALWAYS let the batteries cool before charging them!! I can't speak for LIPOS but charging a hot nicad or nimh is the fastest way to kill it. You CAN expedite cooling with a fan. Some people have made up boxer fans taped on PVC pipes to cool their batteries faster. Just put the battery in the PVC and fire up the fan.

When you get this thing going , please PM or email me and tell me how you like it and how long flight times are with camera gear on.

Thanks!

Glenn.

I'm not really an R/C pilot, I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express last night!

I am hoping to have my servos for this ship very soon, like this mid week and maybe a test flight this weekend.

Anyone have a cooling system made up for your battery packs?

cheers,

Yes, I do. PVC pipe with a 12v fan on each end. It's cool.

OK, Dean, here are a couple of quick pics.

It is basically a piece of 4" PVC drain pipe with a drain grate on each end and a 12V fan in each, one blowing in and the other blowing out. There are coat-hanger wires inside to keep the batteries away from the bottom and the sides

Here is the cooler itself with a "typical" 32-cell Joker pack next to it:

Here is a shot inside one of the ends so you can see the fan - I just needed to cut the square corners of the fan off to fit inside:

The long wires you see coming off the right side are for the two fans, there is a small hole in the side just out of view where the battery wires come out to be charged.

I am going to put this cooling system on my todo

Hey Greg, some neat shots of a neat cooling system!

I see you have the joker and the batterys fit right in the cooling pipe.

i will be running a different shape/configurated pack with my Voyager 50 E so I will need a wider pipe, but I get the idea.

thanks for posting the pictures.
I am going to put this cooling system on my todo list.

cheers,

Dean:

The thing that made it easy was to find the grates that are made to fit inside the PVC pipe and just design it around that!

I have to find pipe or something big enough to fit my packs in.

The 32Cell packs I am using can be seen in the first image on this page:
http://www.airfoilhelicam.com/voyager50.php

It sits right below the main gear and motor.

If you can't find a pipe the right size, you can always just make a box the size you need out of 1/8" plywood and make holes in the ends to attach the fans. You could hinge the top like a door.

Hey, maybe I will just make a box, its on my todo list.

How long does it usually take to cool a pack down using your cooling system?

I haven't used it to cool the packs down by themselves, I have only used it to keep them cool while charging them.
