Miniature Aircraft Nitro/Gas Helicopters > My rusty balls....

I built my Fury about a month ago. Only able to squeeze in two hovering flights because of the weather we've been having around here lately, but I've noticed an issue with the ball links on the head rusting already.

I've thought about oiling my rusty balls, but I've heard that the oil will attract dirt and cause pre-mature wear. Rusty balls are one thing, but nobody likes sloppy balls.

Any ideas?

Eric

BTW - Why doesn't MA use stainless balls like a lot of the other manufacturers?

What is causing the corrosion? Do you have chlorine nearby? even in high humid I don't have corrosion on exposed steel parts. If it's just "discoloration" then a little oil on a rag to polish your balls would do it. if it's "scaling" then you balls will be loose for sure. I would grab your balls an look into getting some "real" balls.

He,he, you fellas R sooooo funny! My guess on your rusty balls is obviously from touching them, they are steel and the corrosive elements in your hand oils is what is corroding them. I always wipe a light oil cloth on all the XL balls when im done building my heli the first time then just occasionally when anything starts looking rusty again. This is the reason factorys make the employees wear latex gloves when assembling components so you dont recieve rusty NIB parts. The oil rubbed on the links wont make em fall off in flight just use a little on a rag and wipe all off just enough to remove rust and lightly coat and protect. Good day.................

Doug,

Actually, a few of the balls were a little rusty right out of the bag!

Most likely it's like heliman41 said, my balls are rusty from handling them a little too much. Plus the fact that during assembly, I wiped all of the threads off with some alcohol. Probably dried them out a bit and removed what little oil was on them to begin with.

Looks like if it rains tonight I'll spend the evening rubbing some oil on my balls...

Thanks,

Eric

playing with balls

all you guys play with your balls to much if you spend more time on the rod you would probably be much happier. Try rubbing a little oil on the rod so it doesn't rust...

alcohol

Please be careful with alcohol. It is notorious for causing rust. If you clean metal with alcohol it needs to be cleaned with some form of oil to prevent the rust. The alcohol will attract water even in very dry climates. It is hydrophilic. (I think that is the correct term.)

I quess a dog has nothing on us r/c heli owners, I mean he cleans his, we clean ours, nothing to be jealous about here. of course if a dog's balls get rusty, I wouldn't want to be sitting next to him when he starts licking.

Thanks guys!

All of your heartfelt concern about the condition of my balls is truly moving!

You'll all be happy to know that after some gentle TLC with Tri-Flow, my balls have never looked or felt better!

Don't forget to lube your shaft as well.

Wouldn't want to have lubed balls, with a dry shaft would you?

Build it, fly it, crash it. Repeat as often as needed.

Never neglect the shaft...

Brian - My main 'shaft' is always kept lubed. A dry shaft leads to all types of friction problems...

lube the shaft

speaking about the long shaft conversions just lube the short one and before long you will have a long shaft.

kind of like being at a nude beach you don't want to get caught putting on sunscreen and the more you put on the more you need.

I'm sure some of the 700's out there are really 550's if you measure them...
