hi,
can you hook up the controller to the computer and then try flying it on the comp with a sim?

Yes, you can hook up your actual remote control to the computer. However, you must have the proper sim. CSM, Real Flight (the new one) and Tru-Flight do it. There may be others, but these are the ones I know for sure.

Of the three, I receommend the CSM version 10. It does not look as "pretty" as the others. But it offers the best flight qalities and that is what is most important.

I think all online stores got more or less all sims in their catalog. Pick the store you like and search through the inventory.

Other option is to get a free sim and just build / buy an interface. If you use the search function at RR you will find a lot of threads regarding free sims.

Enjoy one way or the other.

Which Sim To Get?

I would suggest you go with the CSM version 10.

A lot of people will look at the CSM and assume it is bad since it has a lower graphics level as compared to Real Flight. However, the CSM does something very important, it CORRECTLY SIMULATES a r/c helicopter or airplane.

Granted, the Real Flight "looks" better compared to the CSM. But, it does not even come close to the flight quality of the CSM. Real Flight uses all of your computer's processing power to generate pretty looking airplanes. It uses a very small part of you computer to SIMULATE ACTUAL FLIGHT.

CSM uses most of your computer's processing power to accurately SIMULATE FLIGHT. Does not sound like its too hard to do, but it is the hardest part It takes a huge amount of computer power to do it well.

Also, take a look at who is reccommending what. I bet 95% of people who use Real Flight are newbies who fall into the trap of "it looks better, so it must fly better". Turn around and look at experienced heli pilots who use a simulator to pratice and learn maneuvers. I will bet that 95% are using the CSM...

I hope this helps. -Steve

Not to disagree... well, ok, I'm going to a little...

I bought G2 based on my discussions with some local flyers who use it. These guys still use it for trying setups, working new 3d stuff, and passing the time when the weather sux. Graphics were not really discussed, and actually, they, as I, seemed to turn alot of them off.

Obviously, I can't speak for everyone, but that's my experience, limited as it is.

Found this on www.heliguy.com makes for a compelling case for sims.

"A local guy has recently prooven beyond a reasonable doubt that simulators work, and work well.

Having never flown any rc aircraft before, he practiced airplanes in his simulator.
His first time out to the field he was sucessfully flying his Zaggi electric airplane.

He was also practicing helicopters on the sim and was waiting for his Raptor to come in. Not realizing that you're "supposed" to learn tail-in first he learnt nose-in because that was how his simulator was set to default. So, he learned nose-in.

Yesterday out at the field we got his helicopter set up and trimmed out. He stuck on the training gear and took off... nose-in. Well, he got it up to about 10 feet and we were all watching thinking... oops, there goes his helicopter... but he landed it... nose in. He had to cut short the flying because the training sticks kept falling out and landing was getting tricky with 3 or less legs.

Wow.

Well, today he got in the same situation, but instead of landing it he just decided... wtf, I'll fly it around. He did. Two circles around before he brought it back in and landed. Nose in."

Mine is on order!!
