The temperature of my C40-12T (built in heat sink) has been routinely approaching 180F, with a max of 200 after running 10 minutes with the canopy on(measured with an IR therm). The ESC and batteries (7cells GP3300) only get warm to the touch. I couldn't find any info on others experiences. Hacker did say in an email that the design temperature is up to 180F, but I don't want to push the limits...

So, I decided to lightly epoxy a 1.5" 12vdc fan to the top of the motor. It just clears the canopy, and runs well off the main battery (drawing 80ma). I thought about using a 5v off the BEC, but didn't want to rob any power from the rxr or servos (plus I have a bunch of these fans laying around :c). The fan weighs in at 12grams, which according to the manual decreases flight time by 12seconds (between this and the plastic "strike protector" tube inside the boom tube, I've added close to 30g of weight to the heli)

The good news: Since the install, the motor has barely reached 120F, and requires no waiting for "cool down" between battery packs!

If your motor has already hit 200F, then you may have already demagnetized your magnets some. You may want to send it to aeromodels to have the magnets checked.

Your runtimes are suspiciously short, too. You should get over 13 minutes on a GP3300 pack - another reason why you may want to send the motor in to be checked.

Where did you buy this fan? The only one I can find is the Radio Shack 12v micro made for laptops.

First, I will tell you that I don't know much yet in heli hobby but I know a lot more about heat dissipation. A first look at the hacker motor with the heatsink show that this kind of heatsink should be use when the motor is setup horizontally not vertically. Heatsink work by convection. Air need to pass between the fins for the heatsink to do its job. In this position the convected air just touch the edge of the fin of the heatsink instead of going between them. This kind of heatsink is probably effective in an airplane or in a car but far from the best for an heli. A heatsink with fins going vertically would be better in this heli application.

Bye,
Clovis
