Actually, Gamma rays are just one type of radiation, not where radiation comes from. Radiation refers to the propagation of waves and particles through space and includes both electromagnetic radiation and atomic and subatomic particle radiation. Heat is a form of radiation. Radioactivity is also a type of radiation, and is produced from the decay of unstable atoms (like Uranium 234, Plutonium, etc.) There are 4 types of radioactivity: Alpha, Beta, Electromagnetic (Gamma), and Neutronal. Gamma is by far the most dangerous to us as it can penetrate our bodies deeply and cause the most cellular destruction (radioactive poisoning). Smoke detectors mostly emit Alpha waves, which are easily stopped from penetrating our bodies by our skin itself, clothing, even paper. Although Gamma rays are produced artificially through atomic collision, they also occur naturally when unstable atoms change energy states (atomic decomposition). During atomic decay alpha, beta, and gamma radiation is produced. Neutronic radiation is primarily only caused by atomic collision, and can penetrate the furtherst of any of the particle radioactives (Alpha, Beta, and Neutron are all particle emissions. Gamma is an electromagnetic wave.) The amount of radiation you're exposed to daily depends on where you live and what your lifestyle is, but generally the average human is exposed to 360mrem per year, while those working in the Nuclear industry can run as high as 5000mrem per year.

Well I don't know about you guys, but I took a fire prevention and life safety course here. During that course we studied smoke detectors. a radioactive material is inside a gold foil pouch. we were told if there is a break in the foil and any of that material touches your skin, there is a 50% chance of skin cancer. may be stretching it, but the odds didn't sound too good to me.
smoke detectors are useless. they go off at wierd times, if they work at all, because of the volatile nature of the pouch, never consistent.

but these are arguments from a guy that likes to take a hockey puck in the head so....

So what happens if we all start marking our helis the same way? That'd be like everyone having the same keys to our cars. Then what?

I dunno... but when we all grow that 3rd testicle from the radiation we'd probably be more popular with the ladies!!!

Mentioning the satelites detecting it, not a chance, the atmosphere would absorb quite a lot of that radiation, and the source is so weak that it probably wouldnt be detectable twenty feet away.

There is no chance of getting skin cancer from it, you can safely handle (with your hands) plutonium without it being dangerous, aslong as its not near critical density/mass, it will not emit dangerous radiation over the short term, but when two subcritical masses are brought in close proximity, you will see a spark fly between the two halfs, and the room will be lit up with a blue light, but unfortunatly if you are holding it when you see this, you better make the next few hours the best you ever had

http://www.childrenofthemanhattanpr...is_Slotin_1.htm

note where it mentions his thumb in a cavity in one of the two halfs, now thats before it went wrong, so if he felt it was safe enough to do that with plutonium then its fine to handle a patch of americium

wow, thats pretty intense zoom boy, I just read the site that is linked, that is something else, i can't immagine the blue glow... very errie. but as you said, the amount of exposure is so minimal with those smoke detectors, they wouldn't be in our houses if there was any chance of serious injury.

On four of my birds I took an engraver and put my AMA number on the bottom side of the swashplate. Dosen't disturb the movement, and is totally out of sight.

just a week ago someone broke into my house had 2 heli's and an r/c car by the front door ready for a sunday flight.
they took my dvd player and a bunch of movies, walked right by the heli's!
i usually keep them in an upstairs room but it's such a hassle carting them up and down the stairs. oh, and they got my fuji 12-speed also.

on another note....i wonder if one could employ those rfid tags like you get when you buy a product. i may look into that since alot of our local pawn shops have sensors at their doors.all one would have to do is put one in your pocket from a previously purchased item from like wally world and enter the pawn shop ,it should trigger it. but of course whoever swiped your heli would have to be stupid enough to take it to a pawn shop to begin with! ken

Ok this may sound strange. My mom is an agility trainer and we were talking one day about my heli and she suggested going to the vet and buying a Microchip that is a tiny computer chip or transponder about the size of a grain of rice. It stores an identification number and transmits that information through radio waves to the appropriate scanner.
the chips run around $25.00 to $30.00 and the receiver about $150.00

I've heard of those.. they're called Ident-A-Pet or something like that, and they're to help identify your pet if it should be stolen or whatnot. That would be a good solution to helicopter ID.. just build it inside the frames somewhere where it can't be seen, and each has it's own ID!

Here's a site you can purchase the ID chip for $18.99 and, if you want a personal search device, they offer a scanner for these as well. It's pricey though at $225.

I think it may do a lot of you some good if you did swallow the Radio active glow spot, better still don’t bother taking it out of the smoke alarm swallow that as well and then you could swallow the Geiger counter so then you will always no where you are.

That has to be the dumbest idea I have seen. Buying buying geiger counters and all that. Silly, just silly.

And how does one get there chopper back with this method?

You'll get it back if you check around the local pawn shops and other venues that burglers sell their stolen goods at. The marking methods are so that you can quickly and absolutely identify it as yours. Police will act quicker if you have some method to positively identify your stuff other than "Yea, that's my helicopter right there!"

The geiger counter method is a little extreme, but is probably the cheapest way. The pet ID chips would work well, but the device to read it is $225, and I think you'd have problems getting the police to take your supposed heli to a veterinarian to be inspected LOL! However, if you use them to mark various things in your home with the chips then it would probably be worth investing in it.

I'm waiting for something like a GPS chip that can be placed on the item to become available at reasonable cost. Then you won't have to scope out all the pawn shops and want ads.. just pull it up on a GPS locater and you'll see EXACTLY where it is. Kinda like Lojak for your helis LOL!

I don't know

I hope you go to this much trouble with your car as I bet it costs more than your heli - please excuse me for insulting those who actually spend more on their "toy" helicoper than they do on their car - to those who have been following this thread with interest I would say - GET A LIFE.... or at least insurance.
