You need to buy a simulator first. Once you get the Helo, you won't be able to stay away from it. Learn to fly the sim and you'll do less repairs on whatever Heli you end up buying.
BTW, my Venture 30 has treated me well so far but then again I haven't done any aerobatics with it yet! (Can't go wrong with Heliproz!)

Go with the Raptor 50, or buy my SE. The Raptor is great for beginners and fully 3D capable.

Here's another vote for the 50 size. They only cost a little bit more to buy, and the crash costs are almost the same. Many of the parts are interchangeable.

The upside is a larger disc and more stable ship. You can set it up very mild to learn on. Once the motor is broken in, they sip fuel when leaned up at low headspeeds for hovering and learning. Not quite as economical as the 30, but fuel will be the least of your worries.

The magic is it will have the torque to get you out of trouble when you make a mistake. This will be handy when learning, extremely useful when you're starting even the mild aerobatics. You'll keep flying your 50 for the low cost fun factor, even if you take this hobby to the extremes. The performance and power to weight are up there.

You can certainly upgrade later, but why spend the money on a useless engine and small boom and blades. Skipping 30's was one of the best choices I ever made in this hobby. The Raptor was another. Skipped the 9C on the first round... so now I have an expensive buddy box.

Best Bang For the Buck. Gear that will take you the farthest at the best possible cost. You'll see it from me and a thousand others who have been there. (Can't go wrong with an 8103 either.)

Best of Luck. Welcome to the addiction.

Which One

Hi,

Just a suggestion. Buy an Evo .50 then buy a the pinion gear and motor mount for the .30. Fly it as a .30 and when you're ready just go out an buy the 600mm blades and the motor. It may save you a bunch of money if you buy the .50 then down size to a .30. I found it to be much cheaper this way.

Scooterpilot,

That is a interesting idea. Instead of "upgrading" just buy a few parts to "downgrade." I don't think you can go wrong with any of the major 30 or 50 size helis. The EVO looks like a very nice heli!

Going to bring this one out of the box...

It's been along time since i've been here alot has happend. Got my self into another hobby, snatched up a 99 Mitsubishi GSX and got away from r/c...

SO im back! lol. Now i've been reading up for the last few months as well as trying to find this place and I found it again and its in my favs once more.

I've been reading up on these Align T-Rex's and I really want to get one, problem is what size? 450,500, and the 600. Im not going to go all out 3d flying like some of the youtube videos i've watched (if you posted some of your own, i probably watched it, made props and skills )

What has cought my eye is scale fusealages, the Airwolf one mostly, or the standard Bell222, Over the next few weeks i plan on grabbing the G4 Real Flight sim, and using it over the winter, but need to know would the 500 be ok to start with? I've seen deals on these things for under 550 with almost every thing you need besides charger, radio and servos. Thing is I'm finding the 600 for the same price. Now i know the 500 is ruffly 34inchs long (nose to tail) as well as the 600 at 46inchs ruffly.

I'm also kicking around a Futaba 9CHFS for 399 or the airtronics RDS8000... for gyro futabas gy401 with what ever tail servo.

I know bigger is't always better but just want to see what every one else is flying, I know I was going to get a gas one at first but the electrics are what im going for.

Thanks again for this place (to the owner) took me awhile to find this place again.

a good crash is the ones you walk away from...

Most people are flying trex 450,500 and 600s these days.
you can either like align or hate em but from a logical standpoint its hard to not buy one, there the cheap, possibly fly better if not as good as any, and seem more reliable, I think it makes it a bit boring that everyone has the same heli these days, but you just cant beat align just at the moment, there just way ahead of the market.

May I recommand that you look at something completely different. First of all, forget about any gas power helis, they are loud like a motorcycle and it's outdated. Make sure the first heli is a mini or a micro so you can learn around the house or on the drive way. You don't want to drive 30 min just to fly for an hour. For a beginner, the bigger helis are too dangerous and too hard to learn from and they require a large empty or dedicated field. Forget the 3D CP helis because at this level, the cp is a waist of money. You want a micro heli for indoors get the Walkera 5g6 (co-axial easier to fly) or the Walkera 4#3b (single-axial harder to learn but more agile flyer). The corresponding slightly bigger outdoor flyers for the drive way, back yard or garage is the Walkera 5#10 and the Walkera 4g1b. Sound like you have some rc experience so I would highly recommand the Walkera 4g1b if you can be patient enough to learn to fly over a 1-2 months period. Otherwise get the Walkera 5#10. In either case the heli is about $100 (wowhobbies.com), but after shipping and some spare parts you are looking at about $150. Make sure you get the following parts.

* 3 extra battery packs
* 2 extra set of skids
* 2 extra set of blades
* 1 extra charger for the battery pack
* 16 AA rechargable batteries (Sam's Club)
* 2 AA 4-battery charger (Sam's Club)

Look up dream-models.com (Radds School) for flying/Training Instructions. Don't go too high until you have control!!!

Have Fun:

you could also get a radio and a phoenix sim instead of
a twitchy walkera, but hey they are cheap.

Sharing means: you get less.

How do you start a Gas Heli?

You mean a nitro-powered heli.
With the same fixed-wing starter and a starting wand, as already explained by someone else.

The gas heli, OTOH, is best hand-started with the gasoline engine's manual pull-start. No batteries, starters, etc to fiddle with, and starts very easily every time.

I have to say from my own personal experience and many others, do NOT get a micro heli as zheli suggests! They are about THE hardest heli's to learn on period! It's VERY true that the bigger they are the more stable they are and thus much more easy to learn on!

Nitro heli's are outdated???? LOL that's about one of the funniest things I've heard! If you go to ANY heli field, you'll see about 80-90 percent nitro heli's...they are a blast! The noise is part of the fun!

Good luck!
