My new Hacker 48-03 esc must have shorted out and cought on fire
I cant figure out why, could this have happened from a bad solder joint?

You never said if it happened in flight or on the ground? How long after you connected the batteries until it blew?

It happened in the air but I was only about 8-10 feet up when the moter quit I was just trimming it in and checking the tracking

here are links to a few more pics (warning not for week stomach's)

from what they say on the logo-heli bb it appears that the fins of the heat sink must have rubbed thru the heat shrink of the esc and caused a short?

Sorry to see that happen Hovernut. I had a friend back in the RC cars day and the wires going into the motor was rubbing against the purple can and some how shorted the two wire and the ESC also was burnt, but not as bad as yours. Try checking the wire going into the motor. Vibration can have affect on insulation.

You didn't tell us how many cells / what type of batt you was running or size of the blade and pinion gear. You can possibly overcurrent it and one transistor overheated and caught on fire and a dominoes affect happen.

could you post relevant info like, what motor, what pinion, what blades, what battery,.. and most importantly, what throttle percentage was being used in the ESC?

could help with diagnosis.

I have a few thoughts and could rule some of them out with the above info.

had my throttle set to 80% on my tx
it is (or should I say was) the 3D version
this was the first flight with the new esc
I had to replace it after I crashed and broke off one of the caps on my old esc
hope this info helps, this got a lot of attention over at logoheli.com
here is a link to that thread

Could the motor attachment screws be too long? I don't mean to be insulting but I have seen them do this.
