Hey thanks YB2

BTW that's one of your downlinks they're talking about (wait 'till you see what the other one got attached to - computer guided electric heaven!).

They took a lot of footage of the heli infront of the camara as well as calling for shots at moments notice all day every day so I believe the little heli and the shots from it will play a decent part in the program when it goes out on Sunday.

I was on site for 3 days, weather was dingy, windy and generally horrible and I had the kind of cold that wanted to put me on my back for a week - that shoot was worst thing and the best thing rolled into one.

Here's one I took of the Time Team full-size helicopter filming us filming them.

There's a lot more of this kind of thing on the way, will keep RR posted.

Cheers!

Nice pictures.

I was wondering how you rate your Sony DSV1 as an aerial camera? Does it have a AV out that is live all of the time and can you get a remote control to operate the camera?

I am doing video at the moment but am looking towards digital stills soon.

The DSC-V1 is a decent 5Mpx camera with vid out and a remote triggering jack for e.g. the RM-VD1 - but like anything electronic and 1 yr old it's been superceeded already - Canon Powershot Pro1 8mpx looks like a good choice of the moment.

Thanks for the info. Julian.

I have been looking at digital cameras on the internet and it looks like the new 8Mpx cameras are suffering from a lot of noise that can really degrade the picture quality. In particular, the Sony DSC-F828 really seems to have a big noise problem together with a 'purple fringing' problem. I do believe Canon are doing a good job at controling this effect. Will have a look at the Pro 1 you metioned.

I may go for a 5Mpx at least to start with, until the 8Mpx problems are sorted out.

Paul.

(Love your camera ship!)

Yes, that seems like a good analysis, the DSC-V1 works.

It seems to like Program mode better than the green auto mode, setting -0.3EV to -0.7EV seems to help. Only real criticism for our application is that it eats dust - i.e. it's easy to get dust on the inaccessible rear surface of the lens.

Cheers!

Congratulations Julian.
And about dust into the camera lenses, this was the reason to choose in my case a camera with optional lens mounting attached to the camera body. All the original camera lenses run inside this adapter and it´s impossible to get any dust inside. Also the use of an UV filter helps to keep the main lenses clean having no bad effects over any picture and at a low cost.
Cant say which one will be my next camera but sure must have the same option.
PD. which is the best shoot angle and Sun angle to shoot pictures for archeological purposes? Low sun and vertical shoot? Hight Sun and flat shoots? half and half?

H Elossam,

In this case the best time to shoot was immediately at very short notice just so long as it was not actually dark or raining.

Tecnically I think it is ideal with sun overhead or in diffuse lighting because we are looking here for discoloration patterns fom the substrate more than topographical features producing shaddows.

- but that all depends what you're looking for. Shadows could be good to locate a series of ditches.

I saw the last half of the show - I didn't see the camera ship. Was it shown during the first half?

There were some great aerial shots shown on the programme.

Hi,

It's a reall bummer - they used the shots just not the machine - the director called me just before the show went out to apologise - reason was that they shot the build up to a couple of shots that were not used - and used a bunch of shots where they didn't film the build up.

- Anyway they've kindly offered to make a "Time Team behind the scenes with Autography Aerials" mini feature for us which we'll use as a promo - so that's nice.

Hopefully there will be more of us on-screen in forthcoming programs - Sunday's was the first one we did.

Cheers,

Julian

Julian,

Been thinking about your statement "Only real criticism for our application is that it eats dust - i.e. it's easy to get dust on the inaccessible rear surface of the lens." and wondered if a sport or marine enclosure would be of help.

Have been searching the net for and enclosure for the DSCV1 but so far unable to locate one. My local Sony shop here that does stock the DSCV1 said that the camera 'may be too new' but they do expect Sony to come up with something soon.
