Engines Plugs Mufflers Fuel > Need advice - heli would not hover

Hi everyone,

Need some advice from the expert. I am having difficulty trying to tune my new OS32SXH ring engine. The heli just won't hover above 1 inch and when I increase the throttle further, the rpm will slow down. I did measure my blade pitch with a pitch gauge and it is reading 5-5.5 deg at the hovering stick.

By the way, I am using 15% fuel with 20% lub.

I started out the carb setting with 1.5 turn on the main needle and 2-1/4 turn on the idle needle. The throttle response is really bad. I then slowly lean the main needle and at the same time adjusted the idle needle too but the heli just won't hover at all. I still see smoke coming out from the muffler. The main needle now is 1 turn and I don't dare to lean it any further as I am worried it may damage the engine.

Do you know what is the right setting for the main and idel needle so that I can try it out here ? I read in the internet for OS32SXH engine, the main needle should be around 1.5-2 turn but I have lean it to 1 turn and the heli still would not hover at all.

I did measure the rpm with a tachometer and the rpm will go up to 1400+ only and then slow down to 11-1200+ rpm when I increase the throttle.

I have installed an air filter at the carb air intake port. Can this be the culprit for this ? The filter is homemade using material cut from a pesticide face mask.

Any help from the gurus would be appreciated.

take off the filter and run it that way. did you break in your engine?

Hover?

This may sound silly, but, I actually did this once.

I tried to adjust something in my radio when I first started, I had the same symptoms that you describe.....turns out I had my collective set in reverse!!
The more throttle I gave it the more the engine would load up and no way was that thing gonna take off. It just kept trying to fly into the ground!
So, I'm not saying this is what's happening to you, but, it might be worth a look.

If you have your throttle curve at 50% on point 3 then up that to 60% and try that cause if your were lifting off and only 1400 rpm then you do need more rpm's and I think the low end needle is to far out should be closer to 1.25 - 1.5 turns out. Then up your point 4 throttle curve to 80% or so.

I had the same problem with my engine.
The engine is actually running too lean so start by turning the main needle anticlockwise about 3-4 clicks at a time until it will lift off into a hover and will climb away if you add more throttle.
I don't have an air filter though.

Air filter blocking air to carb - what will happen ?

Does anyone with engine knowledge knows what will happen if the air filter is restricting too much air into the carb ? Will it cause the engine to lost power and reduction in rpm no matter how lean you set the main needle ?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers

If you can't get air you will pull fuel from the carb
You will run rich
engine class 101
BURN MORE FUEL

Thanks to everyone who responded

I will remove the air filter and try again this weekend. Seems like what I'm hearing is the air filter is likely to restrain air from going in to the carb since I still see a lot of smoke from the muffler even with the main needle down to 1 turn.
