| Hi Joe,
I'll try to answer your questions, I'm sure you will get a lot of answers.
Almost all clubs in the USA require you to have an AMA membership if you are going to fly at their field. This is because AMA membership provides you with liability insurance.
You can also belong to any other organization in addition to the AMA if you like, but you have to start with the AMA membership to be able to fly at least.
There are many other specialty organizations out there, but these do not replace the need for an AMA membership.
There may be some clubs out there that do not require an AMA membership, but you generally do not find them in very populated areas because of the insurance liability issue.
I'd join the AMA even if you were not going to join a club as the liability insurance may help you out if you ever plant your aircraft into a car or someones front window of their house. Be aware that AMA insurance for individual members is secondary to any home owners or other insurance that you may have.
AMA will also cover your models if they are stolen from your automobile if your automobile was broken into and there is a police report. So this is another side benefit.
You will receive a monthly magazine for the cost of membership. Some do not like the magazine, you'll have to make your own opinion on this. I like it as it gives me a general idea about what a lot of others are doing in R/C as it lightly covers all aspects of aero-modeling (not just r/c heli's).
I hope this helps answer some of your questions. |
