Thunder Tiger Raptors 30-90 - Imperio > Raptor 30 - new build - collective binding question

Greets! I'm in the process of building a new Raptor 30.

I'm to the point where I have the swashplate and washout sitting on the main shaft and have connect the control arms to the various control throws.

When NOT connected to the swashplate all control surfaces move great! Very easy!

WHEN connected to the swashplate:

1. The forward/aft movement seems a tight even though I went as far as to lightly sand both the ball links and the inside of the connector.

2. The collective doesn't slide up and down the shaft perfectly smooth. In fact, I have to lightly 'help' it a bit. It moves 'smooth' but just doesn't 'glide' up and down the shaft. I think if it were connected to a servo the servo would have no problem moving it throughout the entire range, its just not smooth.

Having never built a bird before.. is this normal?

PS: I did lightly oil both the swashplate and the shaft.

Thanks for the help!

Use the JR sizing tool to ream out the ball links until they move freely. If you sanded the balls and the links I might suggest replacing them.

I had this problem...

I also had the swashplate and collective on mine to be very stiff after assembly. Turns out, when putting everything on the main mast, i put the washout assmebly on upside down causing the links to bind on the swashplate. I discoverd this after trying to set my pitch for each blade.

I simply took the head off and flipped the washout assembly right side up and reassembled the head. Now it is smooth as glass. The only thing now is from the excessive binding, the sawshplate has a lot of play in it. It flies great but it could be better.

This could be whats causing your problem, or it could be something totally different. The arms on the washout assembly that connect to the swashplate should be 90 degrees straight up and down.

As for the stiff collective, after a few flights that went away. The swashplate was a tight fit on the mast and over time it eventually made its groove.

Hope this helps...

Stet: Thanks. I don't know WHAT I was thinking. I could have swore I read somewhere that sanding the balls/links was a good technique. Turns out I mis-read the information. I ordered the JR tool..

jeflies: Well, after reading your post I ran our to check the swashplate.. it was on correctly. Where I DID mess up was that the arms on the washout had flipped upside down. Not sure if I had put them on this way or if they flipped before I put them on the main shaft. Thanks for helping me catch that.

Unfortunately, I broke one of the screws inside the machined swashplate while trying to remove the ball link. Scratch one $60 swashplate. It seems they loctite those suckers in with red loctite. Makes sense I guess.

So.. a new swashplate, new elevator arms (the links are molded into the assembly) and a full set of Rocket City links are on order.

This hobby is very, very, good at being able to assign a price to my stupidity!

Thanks again.
