Yeah, so I went down. First time and was almost through my first gallon, maybe one more tank left. My tail rotor pitch linkage bound up (the little keeper that slides onto the tail boom rode up on it and jammed it, I think).

I have not started to fix yet, but I know I will be using my crash kit, and just ordered another tail drive wire and tube.

It really isn't the heli's fault (Hawk IV), I modified it to have the just behind the main frame mount and should have made sure the keeper was secure.

When repaired, its going back to stock. No more mods, just more fuel.

Helis do not suck, despite the setbacks.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune.
But, I'm glad you have a good attitude about it and see it for the learning experience that it is.
The best way to learn is to do just what you said, "get out there and burn fuel" That....in my opinion is the very best "upgrade" you can get.........keep at it.....you're doing fine.
