Engines Plugs Mufflers Fuel > Weston Weirdness... Falling apart

I've been running a weston on my Hawk IV with the OS32 for about a week now, and have been very happy with it... Until today. While hovering about 100 feet up, it got louder all of a sudden, and something fell out of the sky. Turns out it was the exhaust tube coming out of the pipe's main body. So now I have a weston without the deflector tube out of the pipe. I'm going to try and tig weld it back togethor tommorrow, but has anyone ever had this happen? Seems pretty weird? Did I just pick a weird harmonic headspeed that vibrated the tube loose? Was the weld bad? Any ideas?

Thanks, John Cadwell

I'd send it back to the place of purchase. It shouldn't do that
in such a small amount of time.

I had 2 and neither of them ever failed. A friends had the EXACT
same thing happen as you did but his is at least 1.5 seasons old.

I bought it used, so I'm not sure how much time it has on it. It is in nice shape, with no dings, and it worked very well until this little mishap.

I recall that that type of failure is often due to overheating the unit (ie.
running it too lean).

Also these pipes don't like to have the Silicone deflectors added,it strains the joint even more.

I heard there was a batch of westons that got out that had this problem. Weston is aware of it and so are most US dealers. Send it to the US distributer (Vario east I think) and they should swap it out if it showes no signs of other damage.
I have a Weston for my OS 50 thats hit the ground on a hard flat crash landing and it bent the header pipe when the stinger hit but it's still runs great and showes no sign of cracks after 3 gallons of fuel.

No silicone deflector added... Any tips on tuning with the Weston? I felt like I had it pretty well tuned in for the top end by shooting autos with it, and getting it to drop right into the throttle hold without lagging and staying revved up. Good power, and a decent amount of smoke. How hot should the pipe itself be? I think I'm just going to TIG it tommorrow. The weld on it from the factory had that "barely there" look to it.
