Century Hawk - Falcon - Raven - Predator > Century Gasser Buildup-UPDATED Feb '06

Hey guys,
Just wanted to put a word out that my Predator Carbon Gasser kit came with the new tail speed up gears. The reason I wanted to mention it is because nothing in the box mentions this change nor how to properly install them.

The 14-tooth gear goes on the tail input shaft. The 13-tooth gear goes on the tail output shaft. They are both silver but the teeth directions do agree with the manual as well.

They also included two small shims which I ended up using at the end of the brass spacer on the tail output shaft to eliminate side-to-side play in the shaft.

The new gears feel silky smooth right of the box. I hope it works out that way for everyone else, too.

Gasser Muffler

Hi! I`m enjoying braking in my new Predator Carbon gasser with the 260 Hanson mod eng. But I wonder about the muffler; its so diffucult to take off and on; is there another that goes with this? easier to put on and off?

Just got my gasser finished too.. have .6 hr on the chopper...
I too noticed the new tail gears.....If you you look close at the pic, you will see that the gears sweep a different way, that is the only way to identify them now that they are the same color.

I do have a question about the thrust bearing in the head. Had a little unexpected contact with the ground when my tail servo came unpluged, and after replacing the cross shaft (Spindle) and reassembling the head, I noticed that the blade grips don't feel totally smooth when they are rotated, kind of feel notched. Took it back apart to verify there was no dirt, properly greased and proper assembly, but the problem persisted upon reassembly. The "clicking" is not bad, but is noticeable... Any Ideas on how to corret this?

It Fly's It Fly's......

My Predator Carbon STRETCH Gasser Flew "Hovered" Today...
Thanks to James F. " AGRAV8" Last Sunday he drove over to my house "2 1/2 hrs away" to help with the odds and ends to get this thing in the air well after all day Sunday we worked so hard to get this Gasser in the air and I do mean ALL DAY and NIGHT!!!! we took the P-Max down to the local HEB parking lot 11:30pm and started this baby up on the first shot... Thanks to James he set up the engine so that was possible to start so fast.......

I did not get the thing in the air that night because I had Gyro problems
so it was "1:30am Monday" before James left for the house... Sorry James

I don't know any body else who would spend that kind of time helping somebody get there Gasser in the AIR!!!!!!

I can tell everybody that this baby hovered for the first time today and here is the picture to show it in a hover in front of my house!

A BIG THANK YOU! out too : James and Ron Lund for making this Possible..

I did say it was Stretched?
Yep it swings 800mm NHP's Thanks to Ron Lund !!

Could somebody summarize the build-up tips in this thread?

Reading through the whole 144 posts seems overwhelming!

It is really not as bad as you think..... I just printed out the whole thread, with 4 pages per sheet of paper (printer options), then read through them while at work....... As long as it looks like you are working, everyone else assumes you are....Besides I have re-enforced door between me and the passengers!!!

That's a good one. LOL...

Maybe I'll do just that, and copy and paste the core into another thread.

predator gasser

I got my predator gasser yesterday and have started work....This is a great post so I am joining and probably will ask a lot of questions. My first is how to fix the red coil wire above the coil without putting a strain on the wire.

it is fine

they are ALL tight, but they hang in there. You may want to put something around it so it doesn't chafe, but usually not a problem.

.....

I'm so upset right now, I'm trying to unscrew the factory engine mount off the 231 and I've just about stripped the screws, and I'm using the screwdriver that came with it...............what do I do?

use heat.....What ever you do never use locktite on these bolts. Its because of this...I have a special grip screwdriver I use on these, and you don't need to tighten them very much...
Now, if you strip the head, just get you a 3/16 drill bit, and drill at the center till the head just falls off..When you get the plate off, take some vise-grips, and get them ...Sometimes, they will just screw out by hand.

Henry

I have a suggestion. LEAVE IT ON until you have done the fan/clutch alignment. It makes a great plate to vise onto, and we are not worried if it gets mangled a little bit, are we??

Bill is right, heat will help. Also, I have used a hammer on the end of a screw driver to "impact" it while trying to turn it. That does take a second set of hands, though.

...

Thanks for the help Bill and Agrav8, the manual was'nt lying when it said those screws are on tight.....looks like I'm going to have to drill them out though unfortunately......my first day putting this gasser together and already a set-back for me, not much time these days to build.....

Thanks again, Henry

I'm a new predator se with 231 and 720s owner. I've bought the 13-tooth pinion like James told me to but I didn't get the 90-tooth spur gear.

Will the stock gear be OK? I only want to do sport flying and photography.

Thanks!

Yes, Chris

6.7 will be fine. The 90 tooth main gear helps with alignment on the carbon frameset. It is also as low a ratio I suggest for the 231's/26's.

Note I run @ 7.07 right now. Yes, lower than I suggest. The engine is MUCH more touchy-feely to tune there, so I don't advise it to guys without extensive experience (or a GREAT COACH like I have.......BILLME !)

MIKE: Tentative ops plan is depart local area Friday pre-dawn, arrive Petal, MS around noon, hang out with Bill and the gang there, then depart early Sat AM for B-Ham. Request accomidations onboard the covered wagon, please.

Wish I were not filming this stretch 800 buildup, we could knock it out in a day over there with all of us on it. Just not enough control and camera's to get it captured. Darn it !
