AGRAV8 is right. The countersink bolts and the pull start bolts were missing. Ace hardware had them.

Heres a picture (I will upload Monday) of a bracket I made to hold the HF dial indicator. Its made out of an AL angle. No need for a vise or magnetic holder. Just a different way...

My kit was also missing the landing gear spacers.

Good luck hrpull

Buzzard:

Thanks for the info, I look forward to see your jig for the dial indicator. HF was a madhouse today and I was able to get the dial indicator only.

Thanks,

Tip for Dial Indicating the Fan w/o a VISE

I don't have a nice vise like brother James so I had to improvise...

I took the machined base plate and took one screw and mounted it to the exhaust port. I could then lay the engine on it's side and the base plate is down on the workbench. I set my dial indicator (typical magnetic base unit) on the metal baseplate (Magnet doesn't work as the base is aluminum) but it is wide enough and flat enough to hold the indicator base block. I then adjusted the arms so I could indicate the fan runout with the engine on it's side.

I wasn't sure if this would work but I was ready to get the fan done and move along on the build.

I took the spark plug out and shimmed up the base plate so it wouldn't wobble on the bench. Once I had the dial indicator set I turned the motor over but GENTLY spinning the bottom driver for the pull start. You won't get it to work touching the fan, too much influence that way. I saw no movement when carefully turning the engine over using the bottom method.

I was able to get the fan and clutch around 0.0015".

After you tinker with it a bit you can easily see if you are influencing the indicator by turning it, I tried turning the fan itself and it simply didn't work, it was moving 5/10 thous. by touching it. Spinning it around from the back was the trick, I rotated it very slowly with minimal pressure, just enought to rotate it 15=20 degrees at a time.

BTW_ My kit was missing the 3 countersunk screws to hold the backplate to the motor. Ace is the place.. got hooked up right plus I got the socket head bolts that hold the fan shroud base palte on so I can use it with an open ended wrench to remove the fan if necessary. Sweet deal there James!

My kit was also missing one 26mm hex spacer for the front tranny, they are going to send me a replacement out so I should be hooked up by the weekend!

Here is my dial indicator bracket I built from some AL angle. I hope the picture gives enough detail.

Guys

I love it when you all get creative to overcome an obsticle. Good work, fella's......that will help others not fortunate enough to have some of the "trinkets" in their garage like I do......

turn clockwise until the needle is FIRMLY seated, then back out 1 3/8 turns.
Beware my suggested throttle curves....a default curve will overspeed the head (and engine) right away. 1800 rpm headspeed for breakin.

Good luck !

got it. i plan on having my mentor out with me when i fire it up. i want him to fly it first just to make sure that everything is set up correctly. i can't wait to get it flying though. should i hold off on the govenor until i finish breaking it in? i have the TJ Pro with Stator Gator Installed, but i plan on holding off on using it.

without

establish normal and idle up curves first.

jury is still out on TJ/gator. Maybe you can find the trick to it.

note breakin procedures.....avoid WFO throttle operations until end of first gallon, and no hard stuff until after 2 gallons. Motor is delivering full output after 3 gallon mark.

Ruffian,
My Predator Gasser is 12 lbs 9 oz with no fuel and the following equipment:

G231PUH
Rotortech 700 mm main blades
V-Blades 110 mm tail blades
R149DP rx
4-cell CP1700SCR rx pack
JR 500T gyro
JR heavy duty switch
9253 on throttle
9254 on tail
3 x 9252 on swash
Century Gas Torpedo Muffler
Callie Graphics vinyl graphics on canopy
Stens fuel filter/pickup
Revolution Whip Antenna
Aluminum A-Arm

Everything else is box stock.

I seem to remember James' PG being 13 lbs 5 oz. I'm sure he will chime in on that. Lift's PG is 12.43 lbs or about 12 lbs 6.9 oz.

Current configuration:

Yep, 13 lbs, 5 Oz...........oh, that was YESTERDAY !

Had a visit from Jenny Craig.......and a little help from Century too......

I now have the SE style removable pull starter........there goes 4 OZ when removed.......

So, now were at 13, 1oz.........NOT ENOUGH !

Also scored a 2200 MaH Li-IOn battery from Century....and a 5.4 volt regulator.......total weight is close to 4 OZ. Why would I ADD 4 Oz??

Cause that 11.5 oz 3500 MaH NiHM is coming OUT ! net savings.......7.5 Oz.......

TOTAL estimated weight (since I can't get to the weight watchers scale for a week or so)........12 lb, 10 oz. Knocked off 3/4 pound at a cost of $80. Gettin skinny, guys......

Note my muffler weight is MORE than the ones you have....by about 3 OZ or so......the price you pay for a prototype (and I AIN"T BITCHIN AT ALL !! ) IT weighs 12.5 Oz by itself.

Guess I could take the "dangling Decorations" off and lose another OZ or so........but I ain't castrating THIS heli......

Im building my gasser right now.. waiting for metal elevator etc..

What would happen if someone assembled a motor with runout above 0.002?

Thanks.

If your runout is excessive you get vibrations throughout the heli. It puts constant stress on the clutch, bell, linings as well as all the bearings in the drive train.

Radio gear can be effected by excessive vibrations as well. The gyro isn't as efficient when vibrating either so you can see some tail rotor degradation.

If you don't get the runout any closer you'll see bolts and screws vibrate themselves loose or snap.

When you dial indicate a fan in and get the runout around 0.001" to 0.0015" the ship really gets really smooth.

0.002" should be OK as is the case in most helis. I really don't think the gasser is any different in this aspect.

I usually try to keep mine under 0.002" and so far I haven't had a problem getting there with metal fans. Obviously you want it as close to perfect as you can get it, take your time and you can get it right.

Payton,

Was the Gasser weighed with the chrome torpedo muffler? I'm guess that adds a few more oz. to the ship over the stock box muffler.

Yes, it was with the torpedo muffler installed.

BAD THINGS HAPPEN as noted if the runout is more than .002 on the fan/clutch. no matter the machine. As I stated.....this is the toughest part of the buildup......get it right and your smooth sailing !
