AGRAV8,

Thanks for the response. Sounds like I need to order the Stator Gator. I checked on their website. Do I order the one listed for 230 RC series engines?

Boiler

BTW, are you going to the Mayday funfly?

GGS-23

is the one to order. You can call Tom and speak to him if need be.

The one for the rc-230 is different.

AGRAV8,

Well, I spent about 5 hours last night trying to use your method to achieve the .002 runout on the fan. I'm not blaming your method as much as I'm blaming the operator (me). No matter how many times I try, once I get within .0015 to .002, then fully tighten the hex head bolt (with washer), it settles in to about .003. I wonder if machine toleances on my parts won't permit .002 or less. I tried moving the fan all the way around the shaft in very small increments. I tried the tapping method, and every time, it would go back to .003 when the bolt is tightened. Am I in big trouble if it stays at .003? If I am, I'm not sure what to try next.

Boiler,

Go to Ace Hardware, and try the cromeplated 6mm socket-head bolt, and washer. They are the best combo I've found..Also, if you are holding the engine fan while tightening the bolt, the weight of the engine will offset the fan ..Let the engine be in a vise, or laying on a table to do this job.
Why don't you try putting the clutch on, and see how close you can get it....You can rotate the clutch ..I measure the bearing cap on the top of the clutch.. 2ths is my personal max on everything...3ths is the thickness of a human hair..I have tried it with 2 ths, and it ran good.

Billme,

Thanks for the reply. The bolt I have is exactly what you recommended. I had the engine in a vise with the vise grips holding the landing gear frame which of course is mounted to the engine. I held the piston from moving while I was tightening the bolt on the fan with a tooth brush. So I was not holding the fan. Any other ideas? If I leave it at .003, what kind of problems am I likely to esperience?

Boiler,
I have been using the same method and bolt/washer that James and Bill are mentioning. I could only get my runout down to .002. But, when I put the clutch on and tried various positions I was able to get the runout down to .0005.

This clutch is where it matters most because that is where it makes contact. So, leave your .003 and see what you can get on the clutch. Just be sure to measure on the solid part of the clutch and not the shoe ends themselves.

Lift,

In other words, measure only at opposite ends of the solid part of the clutch?

Correct

the shoes may give a false reading, but the solid ends coming from the center is what you need to dial indicate on.

AGRAV8, Lift, and Billme,

Thanks for all of the help. I measured the run out at the solid ends of the clutch. Guess what, less than .0015". I appreciate all of the advise. Not sure what I would have done without you guys. Anyway, off to bigger and better things.

I tried to order the upgraded thrust bearing as shown on page 18 of the manual (p/n CNBB1018T). I also tried to order the thrust bearing spacer (p/n HW6045A). The thrust bearing shows up on Century's web page but the spacer does not. I sent an email to Century and they said that the spacer is not included when you order the thrust bearing. How am I supposed to do this upgrade (as recommeded by all) when I can't get the spacer? Also, should I get two of the thrust bearings (one for the bottom collar as shown on page 18 and one for the mast stopper as shown on page 19)?

Once again, thanks everyone for their help.

Hmmmm

I spoke to Century today about that. The spacer is NOT part of the thrust bearing, yet it didn't show on the website. You've got the correct part number (two to a bag, BTW......) and they cost like #3.95 for them.

I'm still scratching my head on that one too.......

They are updating the website to show that part number.

The upper bearing block (double with thrust bearing) has all you need up top. We are talking about the thrust bearing that goes on the bottom of the mainshaft, below the lower bearing block.

Hope this clears (although it adds to it also) the confusion.

I am updating my original post to include that part number. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

James,

Thanks for the reply. Bill was also going to call Century to see what's up. In the meantime, I'm holding off ordering all of the upgrade stuff and the pipe until I can just place one order. So I guess unless I hear back soon, I may not have my Predator ready to have when I head out for Sulphur.

BTW, this is my first Century kit. So far, I am very happy with the way it's going together. I just wish that some of these recommended upgrades were easier to come by. I guess it's mostly because it's so new and everybody wants them. The old supply vs. demand law stikes again.

Boiler,
James told you right, so you will need to buy the spacer(3.95 for two)...The triple bearing block already has one with its TB...
I can't explain why this is, it just is

Alright, alright! I get the picture. It may not be pretty, but it will be there. My problem is, I travel all the time (I'm in LA right now, HotSprings this weekend, Toronto early next week, and Vegas next weekend). It's tough to get it done when I'm not home. I know, excuses, excuses. Maybe I can figure out a way to bring it on the road with me instead of spending the night on RR in my hotel room ;-)

See ya,
