I have received my gear from Airfoil!!!!

I have received my gear from Airfoil!!!!
I got the Voyaber 50 E package (I actually purchased the Voyager 50 kit from a local hobby shop because John was out of Voyager's at the time of my order ).

So, I have to complete building the Voyager kit and then get started testing the machine.

My setup will be as follows:

Helicopter: JR Voyager 50 E w/extensions
-------------> w/ 6mm spindle upgrade
-------------> w/ metal main grip upgrade
Motor: AXI 4120 w/Jetti speed control
Power: 4 3300 Nickel Metal packs
Charger: Astro flight 112D
Radio: JR 8103
Swash servos: 3 Futaba 9252
Tail servo/gyro:Futaba 9253/401
Camera Mount: Airfoil's Carbon M30
Camera: Canon A80

I am hoping to have the Voyager built and ready to take the AXI motor early next week.
Then I am guessing at about a week of testing the machine without the mount. Just testing the trim, blade balance/tracking, flight time etc.. etc...

Really looking forward to the rest of the build and the test flights.

John @ Airfoil: Thanks for your help in emails and phone conversations thus far. I think I will have a few more within the next period of time, I hope to catch you when your not busy.

All active members of " Remote Video and Photography": thanks for your help and replies so far, advice and tips.

There is a large volume of great knowledge in this form, I am hoping to sometime contribe to that volume.

Any comments on the setup, any tips on starting the build?

Cheers, and thanks.

Good luck dude! I don't know diddly about electric helicopters. So I'm here for moral support!

I'm itching to get out myself right now. First day of spring is tomarrow! It finally got above 50 degrees F here today but we've got 30mph winds with gusts over 40mph. Flying in 30 plus is a pain in the you-know-what.

I've got our business "Instant Aerial" to the point were it's TRULY instant AS OF TODAY! My new laptop arrived today via FEDEX. Now EVERYTHING can be done on-site. From the shooting, to the CD burning, invoice generating, even photo printing (although that part is hardly instant, takes longer to print then it does to get the shot).

whoops... rambling here, guess I'm a little overly excited

Go for it Dean!

Groundeffect:

I was looking at your list - you said the 401/9253 gyro/servo - Futaba isn't shipping that any more, the current combo is the 401/9254, that servo has twice the strength and is 25% faster, too, at the same price! I just got the set this week for my Joker-CX.

Go back to your local hobby shop... at least get a good discount!

Daggit:
Cool! I won't tell you want the weather is like here today, otherwise you'd move out and we don't need the competition!

Ethan: thanks for the moral support

Great to hear its really 'instant' now!!

With regards to the weather guys, well, sounds like you guys are on the way to spring, however, here in Newfoundland we just got another 10cm of snow...

It has been mild the past 2 weeks, so I am not expecting it to last long..

Bring on Spring!!

Greg: thanks for the tip and update, but I purchased this 401/9253 combo months back. I will keep it in mind for next time.

I am working on the voyager right now!
The frame set it built, the spindle upgrade and metal grips are completed. Now I am working on the tail assy.

This rocks!

Cheers,
Dean

fill me in guys... is this because of "issues" or did Futaba do it just to make it better?

Maybe my next investment should be a Winnebago so I can move around with the weather

Futaba S9253 - the only servo I ever had fail on me.

I'm really pleased that they've brought out a 9254 with a beefed up spec, the 2x 9253 that I run worry me, so I'm tempted to swap these out immediately.

The canopy is complete and drilled out and installed -- may need some trimming around the skids and maybe for the push rods for on the swash.

Tail boom/belt, frame, radio tray tail gear box are, 6mm spindle upgrade, metal grip upgrade complete.

I am working on:the motor alignment for the next day or so. The the flybar, then install radio system.

It seems pretty typical of a hobby shop to sell you an outdated product when there is a new version out. You know they know it too when they sell you the product. Who sold you yours? HeliHobby?

Hi Dean,

Did you use a high point balancer on the tail and rotor head assy? Perty important stuff here...

Bet you've been wondering will I ever stop spending money and start flying, lol!

airshares: I bought the 401/9253 combo months back, I do not think the 9254 was out at the time.

When did the 9254 hit the market?

eyeisdee1: Hey! Yeah, I have put alot of funds into this machine. All that is left are the servos. They should be in this week, then that should be EVERYTHING to start flying / testing this helicopter.

I did not run the high point on the tail or head assembly at this time.

Do you have any pointers in how to go about it correctly? thanks!! Looking forward to your reply!

I balacned the CF blades, they seem to be balanced gear!

My plan is to test the helicopter for a week or 2 first, then add the camera mount and gear to the whole package.

cheers,
Dean

Before you mount the motor and mount, you absolutely need to make sure the shaft and rotor head assembly are balanced. The easiest way I think to do this is to get the flybar and paddles installed per the manual, then put them a high point balancer. The paddles need to be adjusted inward or outward to get your proper balance. Perfection here is a good trait.

Hate to say this but, pull out the wallet once more and shell out for the high point. After all your build troubles you don't ensure proper balancing, yer gonna be f***ed! A few more bucks at this point is only insurance to protect the bucks you already have spent. The best way to put this issue into perspective is that everything you have built so far supports only two things. Those two long BIG whirly things and those two LITTLE short whirly things that go around really fast, lol. If they are out of balance, yer gonna be hatin it. Make sure the rotor head assy and tail assy are balanced perfectly. Then set your collective perfectly from blade to blade on the bench, from your negative pitch to zero then your maximum positive pitch. Then on your first run up for blade tracking it should be a piece-o-cake.. Did I miss anything?

Well said, it will amaze you how nice the video and pictures will turn out if you take the time to properly tune your platform.

I would rather fly my 30 that is dialed than just about anything else that is 99% dialed.

Balance is everything, if it moves balance it. The more mass it has the more important your balancing is.

If you miss my point, strap your camera to a weedwhacker and fire that puppy up, snap a few picts and you will see what we mean.

any suggestions/steps guys?

Anyone have a step by step on balancing the whole head and whole tail system?

in the past I balanced the blades, and dialed the clutch on my old rappy 30.

any suggestions/steps guys?

cheers!

For example, if the head is not balanced perfect, what is done to correct balance it? Add weight ( tracking tape to the heavy blade)? ??

thanks,

build Update: getting Closer and Closer...

Today I got the Speed controler soldered and connected to the AXI 4120 motor.

A friend of my helped me to the soldered required for SERMOS Connectors on battery packs, field charger, car charger and helped get the motor and speed controler talking.

Motor: AXI 4120
Speed controler: Jeti 70-3P opto

The AXI motor has been mounted using the Airfoil L frames/brackets with the conversion kit. The frames were leveled using a micrometer and calipers. The frames were drilled out, and screws installed.

We ran up the motor today for the first time!! It worked so far without problems. It was run up with just the tail blades installed. The mains were not installed at this time of testing.

I am looking to test it more with the main blades on, maybe strap the machine down and test full throttle, setup pitch throttle etc...

Now I am just waiting for the 9252 servos for the swash to get in.

Cheers,
Dean
