Does any one make a better cooling fan for the Raptor 30

Thanks in advance.

Check the new one made by www.helihut.com priced right.

Or if you want even better consider the TT metal fan, also cheapest at helihut.

The above mentioned fan (Quick UK) can be had at www.gr8lakes.com, and is nice, but personally I believe that to use this type which uses 2 collets, must be dial indicated. That is why I prefer the TT fan, and I understand the new helihut fan is also threaded.

Can you use GV-1 with metal fan

Can you use the Gv-1 with the metal fan. I'm not sure if the magnet with a metal fan.

Well then I stand corrected, if the quick fan is threaded then it should line up pretty good from the start. I used the Quick WW fan (2 collets, no threads), and no big surprise, it took a lot of work to get it dialed in. Started at 12/k runout and was only able to get it to 1.5/k. At 12/k, it snapped the clutch retaining bolts. BTW, I got it on a used ship.

GV1

Absolutely you can use it. I recommend strongly that you install the radio shack magnet (larger) as the field it generates is much stronger. Since the field is stronger, you get a lot more leeway installing the sensor and don't have to have it so close to the magnet and it's center. Install the magnet at the OD of the fan, leaving about 1/16+" between the furthest on the fan OD part of the magnet and the fan edge, it will line up with the sensor no problem. If you are using the 50 engine, then use the 60 bracket and drill a second lower hole to fit. This works out really nicely and there is no problem with performance.

Today I just installed the radio shack magnet on a friend's fury. We got a 97% reading almost 1/8 inch away from the sensor. It is much better than using the stock magnets.

PS: The writeup on www.raptortechnique.com says the Quick UK fan is not threaded, though they might have changed that or the info might not be correct. Personally, I like the TT metal box fan which is threaded. I have no problem cooling the OS50, unlike my OS32 for which I had to add a shroud extension.

Do you have a part number for this magnet?

I dont have the p/n in front of me but its the only magnet @ RatShack
that looks like it'll even come close. About $1.50 as I recall.
Do a search on this system as it's come up before.

They are slightly larger than the stock GV magnet so some mod'ing
of the fan may be required.

It is part number 64-1895, 2 per pkg. If going into a metal fan, just drill a slightly larger hole. I use a drill that is 0.197 diameter, the magnet is 0.195.

watch out for metal fans

A few flights after installing heliproz' metal fan, i noticed axial play in startshaft assembly. I split the sideframes. Startshaft bearing block areas in both sideframes melted, lower startshaft bearing ruined (plastic bonded to outer race, excessive inner/outer race slop, it was done). I then measured runout of metal fan at fan hub to be 6thou. Because the fan THREADS onto the crankshaft, no amount of playing with the tapered collets affects the runout, & you're stuck with what you get. I also measured crank runout on that & two other OS32SX-H's to be ~1/2thou...acceptable. Obviously, if the fan has runout, the clutch will too adding to any misalignment with the startshaft assemby.

I ALSO measured installed stock plastic fan runout at the aluminum hub to be ~1thou. Needless to say I went back to the stock fan. If you cannot get the runout of your metal fan down to that of the crankshaft, I would suggest not using it. Let us know how it goes.

By the way, I have over 900flights on the R30 using the stock fan & no shroud extension of any kind. Be assured it puts out plenty of air. Put your hand under the bird while it's idling & you can feel the airflow. If your engine is overheating, don't blame the fan.

Another consideration. Metal fans are alot more massive than plastic & therefore do not crash well. So, if you do run a metal fan, recheck your runout after any incident. If the runout at the fan hub is bad after a crash then your crankshaft may be bent also.

Don't buy the ronlund metal fan. It has a collet which either has to be machined before it fits into the fan or has to be forced in. It also screws onto the crank. ;-(
