Actually, it's all pretty expensive. Check out Gecko Drive for stepper and servo controllers. I've bought from Dan at Camtronics and I would definately recommend them. Check out Sherline and Taig for small mills that can easily be converted to cnc. They both also sell full cnc package deals but what would be the fun in that? And don't think that you'll save money by putting it together yourself. By the time you have a working setup, you could have bought one of those package deals.

I bought the Taig full package. Looking back, I would have ended up with a nicer machine if I had bought the CNC ready mill and added my own drivers and motors.

The expensive part is not the machine, or even the CNC hardware, it is the tooling and software. After you have a machine that works you still can't do jack if you can't tell it how to move, and make it move into something you want to cut that is held down right. You also need all the support equipment to make the machine usable. (table, computer, vacuum for chips, some kind of coolant setup)

The Taig is a great machine that does some of what I want to do. A CNC router might be a good addition depending on your priorities.

The whole thing about Homebrew CNC is at the end of the day you got a machine that has no capacity to run coolant unless the operator runs the machine in a bath tub or wears a wet suit, no ability to tap holes, limited control software, in most cases, novices doing the programming and operation (no offense intended, just a reality check) on software that couldn't cut it in the real world if it had to. In a nutshell it is an expensive learning experience. Learning experiences are great and if you have the money, fine. My advice is to find a good used real machine and have at it. Learn at a local tech school at night or on weekends. Get a little experience at picking tools, setting speeds and feeds and a feel for different materials and how they cut. Start out with a couple of manual machines from Joe Martin @ Sherline. Sherlines may be small but you can get parts and help. For heli parts they are fine.

I agree with TMoore. I am afraid to add up all the money I have spent trying to get a decent CNC setup. I just recently converted a RongFu gear head mill drill to CNC. Now I wish I had gone all the way and bought a CNC Bridgeport. A Buddy just got a Bridgeport at a local auction for $511 and it is in good shape.

You can waste your money on other CNC cutters, but for $200 you can build one that actually works.

Don't get hung up on the looks, it's the finished product that matters.
