Blades, Night Flying and Painting > Post a Night Flying Pic (plus a question)

Here is my night flyer. Shuttle RG with clear blue canopy and fins on an OS32 with pipe. It also has a RAM spot light that I turn on and off to see the ground for landing. I don't leave it on for 3D as the damn thing is BLINDING. Anyway, I am interested in seeing other subjects from you guys as I am getting ready to setup my XLSE60 with a night rig.

Also - Question: Why the hell doesn't somebody make night tail blades? I have heard all sorts of excuses about 'too small to retain structural integrity' etc... but I am SURE you could do it with a battery on the hub and only wires running through the blades to an LED tip. Anyway, I'm not an engineer but I sure would like a set.

You seem to be very into this, so maybe you can take this idea and run. What about using a luminescent paint on your tail rotors. You can buy paint that either absorbs light energy and releases it over time, or light that shines in uv. What if you painted your tail rotors, and either charged them with a light, or shined LEDS on them. I know they make IR diodes, I am not sure about UV arrays. If you had LEDs that put out UV, or filtered a light source powerful enough to emit useful UV with a gel, you might be able to have glowing tail rotors that were passive. You could balance them perfectly, and nothing would be on the tail to break.

Good luck.

Got ant other pictures?

I was looking at that Pic and wondered just how you have all the light ropes ran. Do you have some detailed pictures of your routing.

I know how about Night flying set up 101

You know, that's a good question. I'll try and take some DAY pics of my night flyer and send them to you. The trick is to use vinyl glue, which likes plastic and the rope and dries quickly AND is removable. Have to hold it down with scotch tape for about an hour as you lay it.

This post was about OTHER people posting too so I hope someone else does.

Pretty nice setup.
Did you cut the two yellow wires on the horizontal fin to length?
If so then how did you connect them to the rest?

The entire system is custom cut to length and has numerous "Y" connections. If you have ever tried to solder this stuff, it's a nightmare though. I highly recommend that you take accurate measurements and let the lovely lady at glowire.com custom cut them for you. I have done it both ways and found that for the $1 per custom connection extra she charges, it is a no brainer. It takes me 1/2 hour + to do a 3 wire Y connection. The wire is a copper inner that's workable surrounded by phosphorous stuff and then wrapped in the two smallest wires I have ever tried to work with, even with a magnifier.

Just let them do it at glowire.

My setup is like this:

9V driver 1 ---> canopy blue (about 8 feet) ----> canopy yellow (about 4')
3V driver 2 ---> tail boom support strut green (about 4 ') ----> horizontal
fin 3 way Y ---> blue (24")
!___>yellow (7")
!___>yellow (7")
3V driver 3 ---> tail boom wrap-around pink (about 3 ') ----> vertical
fin 3 way Y ---> blue (25")
!___>yellow (8")
!___>yellow (6")
Jomar switch on channel 9 to RAM spot light - all on 9 V battery.

In other words, I have two 9 V batteries and 4 AA batteries in these various systems being run on 3 glowire drivers and a Jomar/Ram spot light combo. Also use glowsticks. Adds lots of weight but it's worth it for the effect and redundancy.

Here is my 91 Freya night Ship. Uses three 9v drivers. I don't even use lightsticks anymore, this shows up very well, and I doubt all three are gonna go at the same time.

I did a lot of night flying over the holidays, the neighborhood kids really like it. I just wish is wasn't so cold!

Janet at Glowire.com has been very helpful. I use all the heavy duty stuff, these are all 8 or 10' lengths.
the green and aqua blue show up best, the orange really looks red... In my experience, unless you dedicate a driver to each piece of rope, it isn't bright enough. This thing shows up unbelievably well.

If anyone wants a night canopy for a Freya, I'll send it to you for $10. Its shortened ala Todd Bennett. All the holes are drilled, just needs the rope...
