Can I use a 3 cell LiPoly battery pack with the standard motor and ESC that comes with the Voyager E or should I look at a different ESC like the Great Planes C-50? Thanks in advance.

The stock Voyager's ESC isn't supposed to handle more then 8.4 volts (7 cells) I used to fly w/ 9.6 (8 cells) like most others, but I was told here that any more would cook the controller. A 3 cell li-po would be 11.1 volts. I don't think it would be smart.

If you are upgrading the ESC anyway (you have too) then go for a brushless settup.

Thanks, will pick up a different ESC later this week when I go back to my LHS to pick up two more servos. Think I'll start with the stock motor for a while before spending more on this helicopter-- I'm new to the hobby and wanted to get a more quiet electric I could practice hovering with in my yard. I also have a Raptor 30 and just getting in to forward flight. Will do some research on brushless motors but is there a something special to look for in an ESC if you're going to brushless later other than capacity?

Thanks again.

If you go brussless later then the money you spend on an ESC now is wasted as they are not compatible.

Going brushless will mainly give:
More power
Longer flight time
Built in governor mode
No worries about overheating problems

It's the single best upgrade for the VE and will GREATLY increase you fun factor when flying the VE.

Really ... look into it and go for it BEFORE you do ANYTHING else. You won't regret it.

I totaly agree with Voyager. I started flying with an X-Cell 30, but I learned faster with my Voyager E, because I would bring it to work with me and get 2 flights in during my lunch. I kept it in the trunk of my car with the training skids on it. And when I was done, I didn't have to clean anything up, or wash gas off my hands.
The stock setup works well enough to practice hovering, nose in and forward flight. When I was ready for more, I bought the Astro Flight brushless motor, and a Phoenix 45 controller (from Castle Creations). That's when you can add a lot more cells, or go Li-Po. But wait till your up and flying a lot more.
