why is G2 advertised as not working on laptops? i have a brand new dell computer that is faster than a lot of desktops out there. with the new USB interlink, i would be able to hook it up witout a problem. is there something im overlooking that is the reason it doesnt work on laptops?

thanks

I read a post on the GreatFlights board where some guy with a new Dell laptop configured with an nVidea graphics accelerator had an easy time with G2. Absent the graphics accelerator, though, I'm not sure what would happen--it didn't work on my Dell laptop which is also very fast--but w/out a multimedia graphics card.

this may seem silly, but how do i know if i have one or not. i paid big bucks for this comp. it runs graphics and anything else witout a glitch. i am confident that it will run G2, but yet there is a bit of uncertainty.

I'd actually call Dell and ask if you have a graphics accelerator and if so, which one, how fast.. I'm not at my laptop, but you want to know the graphics card that you have. Also, you might scan the GreatPlanes site--actually a bulletin board on KnifeEdge software who makes it and look for the post on laptop and what that guy had. That's the best I can do...

Works fine on a dell

I have two dell laptops, one an older insperon 7100, the other a new insperon 8200. Realflight deluxe works fine on the older dell as long a you correctly configure the program and turn off the 3d background. G2 does not work very well on the older insperon, it will load just fine but the frame is so slow that the "stuttering" makes it impossible to fly helicopters on the program.

However, my new insperon 8200 with a nvidea 64 mg ultraG4 video card has no trouble running realflight G2 with all the bells and whistles turned on. I have run this program on several different computers, desktops and laptops, with processors ranging from older celerons to the newest 1.7 pentium IV chips and the single most important feature that determines how well the program runs is the video card. Anything under 64 mg will require you to turn off background features and "tweek" the program to get it to run smoothly. I have tried nvidea 8 mg, 32 mg and 64 mg cards------get the fastest video card you can afford. I have no experience with the new 128 mg cards but see no reason why they wouldn't work even better.

G2 Running on 2 yr old Laptop

I just got G2 and installed it on my 2 year old Compaq laptop. I bet your Dell will blow these spec's outta the water...

Windows 2000
500 Mhz PII
128 MB Ram
8 MB ATI Rage Mobility Graphics on board

I had to turn off a number of the graphics bells and whistles (some trees, useless people, etc.), but It runs great with nice frame rate. Only glitch I seem to have is on some sound events (like crashes) it pauses for just a sec. Otherwise, it runs great.

Good luck!

The new Dells have NVidia Mobile GeForce 2Go video chipsets capable of 3D graphics that older laptops (1year) could never do, at least not well. Toshiba is making laptops with GeForce 2Go also.

Why not laptops

My guess is that by stating that G2 does not support laptops, they remove themselves from the obligation to support what can often be "non-standard" type hardware. It is less common now, but it used to be that laptops often had generic video and audio processors since they were included on the main board. These days the OEM's for audio and video chips have realized that this is a substantial market and now there are much more mainstream video and audio "cards" included in laptops.

I'm sure you can understand how supporting software can be a massive pain in the bum, and even more-so if you are trying to support hardware that wasn't really designed for it in the first place.

Not true about "less then 64 wont run with all the stuff"
i have Geforce GTS2 32M running great and fast with everything up on 1024x768. Maybe MX card won't do the trick. But its not about mem.

G2 runs just fine on my Dell Inspiron 7500, with 384mb ram (ran fine back when i had 192mb too), PentiumIII 750, with a 16mb ATI Rage Mobility video card. I use a joystick->USB adapter plugged into the SimBlaster (www.simblaster.com) plugged into my Futaba 9CH. Runs perfectly with the graphics turned down to medium.
