How much tape is too much?

I figured I'd balance my blades finally and I used a razor blade and balanced the blades on it and found the CG. they were'nt exact, and it took strips of black electrical tape at the end of the one blade to match CG (wrapped right around blade). Then I bolted the two blades together and balanced them on the bolt over a couple of glasses. It took at least 5 strips of tape at the lighter blades CG to balance it up. Both CG's are exact now, it balances perfectly. Is this correct??

I took this picture to help you visualize what I'm talking about. The 4 strips on the end of the one blade are doubled. and the one strip in the middle of the other blade has 5 or 6 layers (i cant remember).

Suggestions?

Dont look right

Seems excessive to me also...and "electric" tape will not last with the nitro...it will peel off in 4 or 5 tanks..I tried the same things and ended up buying a decent balancer..it makes a world of difference.

PS..did you epoxy the blade grips ????

I did the blade grip mod.

In the picture u see there. the CG of both blades is within 1 mm of each other (before the tape it was like 6 mm off). Also, they balance perfectly now over the glasses since I put the tape in the middle of the one blade. I also hung the blades on a nail on the wall and marked where they settled on the trailing edge on the wall, both are exact.

hmmm...

Ok, I tried again.. I think it's better this time, there is still double stripped bands. but the center strip on the one blade only goes half way around the blade and is a single layer.. on that same blade, the two strips by the end are both doubled up. The other blade, the tape at the blade grips, one strip is doubled, the other is single..

Can I use electrical tape for the time being. I dont have easy access to anything else... what material should I use for balancing??

Is that better?

I'm guessing u built these would blades from scratch? Your theory on balancing is sound, just making sure.....when u put the lead in, put it all the way towards the tip. Then epoxy them in (i used to use 30 min or more). If u put a piece of masking tape over the whole, then trim it out, then glue it, then pull of tape to get rid of extra glue. Get as close as possible b4 u glue, so u will need less tape. I'm not sure about electrical tape, but maybe if u run a bead of thin CA at the edges it will keep it from peeling, just keep an eye on it. Usually it doesn't take that much tape BTW but...oh well, practice makes perfect.....a little lead=a lot of tape.

"in the old days" b4 they had carbon or glass blades available at a reasonable price, u had to build blades. A triple beam scale and koll-rotor bladed balancer made it easier and more accurate. Those tools alone are about $250-the cost of three sets of blades that u can get now pre-made and balanced (I usually just high-point balance now), so is it worth it? But the way u balanced-either time, they should be pretty damn close. good luck....

I had the same problem with the stock woodies i got with my Sceadu 30...

The spanwise CG was 9 mm off between the two blades, and it took quite a bit of tape to fix it.

I took the easy way out and bought a pair of SAB 550's.. No tape required..

They are the stock woodies

that came with my Raptor 30 when I bought it. I've put a gallon through it already, but I never balanced my blades before this.

So I tried the other day, and the first picture is the result. I tried again later and the second picture was the result... Before I balanced them, the CG of the blades was off about 6 mm or so.. I had done the blade grip mod with CA glue prior to my first flight.. and also once had to use CA glue on the end of one blade because the blade covering had chipped and exposed the wood under it. Maybe that's why it was so off balance.

I'll try the electrical tape for now and buy some proper stuff to use to balance my blades the next time I go to my hobby store.

Once again, it's too windy to fly today!!

Just remember, whatever you put on the blades will eventually come loose. It's quite an exciting sound the first time you hear it

Raptor Blade Balancing

I don't know if all Stock woodies are like this, but... I'm just finishing up my raptor30. I balanced the blades the other day on a KSJ blade balancer and the CG's of both blades were perfect!!! Didn't have to touch them. And only required 1 wrap of tracking tape to get them to balance! -- Not bad for stock!

I don't want to sound like a adv.. but buy a set of vblades...they are pre balanced and bolt on and fly..

I know they are $$ but they are worth every cent.. I just set my brother up with them on a ergo 30 standard and the thing hovers hands off..his first heil and flying too..

I have a set on my ergo 46 long tail heil too.. and also a had a new guy get a set for a raptor and doing well.. the more you can do to smooth out the heli and make it easer to fly the better to learn on...

just my 2 cents worth...
