I'll be curious approximately how many hours it takes you to assemble it. I expect to receive my package Friday, Saturday(?) or Monday, according to his 7 day delivery estimate. I'm waiting with baited breath! I'm in the middle of a new-old house remodeling project also right now, so it will probably take me longer than otherwise to get it built. I'm going to try and set aside a couple hours per night to work on it. Let me know when it's done, and if you found any particular areas to pay close attention to. I've read the article in Model Helicopter World about 6 times now, and he mentions a couple areas to watch as it's being built, but gave it two thumbs up for assembly instructions and fit and finish.

Scott,

The model in the magazine is an older generation. Also the manual does not reflect a couple of very minor changes that will be come very obvious as assembly progresses. When you get to the tail boom mounts, the aluminum mount goes toward the front and the white plastic one goes to the rear. Additionaly the ball and spring are omitted because the new mount is aluminum. By the way, mine arrived two days after shipping.

Chris had told me there were several updates on the newest kit, but didn't go into details. They were supposedly shipping my package last Thursday or Friday, so I didn't expect to receive it until the middle or end of this week. Chris mentioned the carrier, but I had never heard of them. For what he charges, it would seem it could have come FedX 2 or 3 day. I'll let you know when I get it and have looked it over.

I'm also curious about something else. I've recently mentioned at the field I ordered one of these, and the general response has been "what did you order that for?" I had shown a few people the article in MHW, but most people seem to think it's foolish to order a heli from the UK. I may have mentioned our local dealer, GR8 Lakes RC sells locally predominently Raptor, DNHP, and Excel, although he stocks several other brands for shipping over his internet site. I think he is more curious to see what it's like. Have you told any of your local flyers about your purchase, and what was their reaction?

I am very impressed by the design AND having the capability to run straight fuel. Methanol is $1.50 a gallon and the oil about $1.00. So far the time spent has been about 5 hours and it is approximately 80% complete. EVERY part has gone together without any "fitting" and the machine work is outstanding. This heli makes all the competion look sick, sorry guys, trash me if you want the truth hurts. If this Heli flys as good as it looks I will clean out the hanger and buy a back up along with a good stash of spares. Every thing is going together slop free without any "tinkering". Oh yes, wait till you see the quality of the canopy.

The Baby Has Arrived!

Fred & Sam,

I didn't realize it, but a delivery sticker was on my door on Tuesday. I went and picked it up at the Post Office this morning, it came Express Mail. It is very cool! The canopy is very impressive....I got yellow. I'm debating what paint scheme to use. My only dissapointment was he failed to fill my order correctly. He forgot several items. I think he confused an earlier e-mail from the most recent, which included more items. I'm emailing Chris after I finish here. I'm still curious on what other heli pilots comments have been if either of you have announced your new purchase? I presume most people don't really know much about it, unless they read the article in MHW.

5 hours and 80% complete...WOW, how many helis have you built? That's much quicker than I expected. I was thinking more in the 30+ hour range. I skimmed the assembly manual, and it seems very comprehensive. I bought my Raptor 30 as an ARF, so I have virtually no experience building a heli from scratch, but I'm really looking forward to building this one. I sure wish I could go at it full steam right away. This whole new (old) house deal is a very good long term move(it's on a inland lake just west of Milwaukee), but in the next three weeks I'm buried in rehabing and moving responsibilities . I'm hoping to fly my Raptor a couple times during the frenzy, let alone build my new 3D NT.

One last question: Methanol and oil. Is that standard airplane fuel? What oil should be used?

That's it for now guys. Stay in touch and I'll do likewise. I make it a point to check email and RunRyder every morning and every night.

Just an update on the progress. It is very close to completion only lacking the final radio equipment mounting and fine tuning every thing and a good preflight.

I bought Klotz HeliGlo www.klotzlube.com it is rather expensive $33.00 per gallon.

I found the methanol by asking questions at a local motorcycle shop. They gave me the number of a local sprint car racer, he is selling it to me for $1.50 a gallon.

If this works good in the 91 I am going to order the Lotterle carb for my OS 50 because it has plenty of power for the Sceadu, not to mention 19.00 a gallon for 12.5% fuel.

Thanks for the tip on the fuel and oil. I'm anxiuos to hear what you think of how it flies also. When I talked with Chris today, he said assembly should take between 6 to 12 hours on average.

For a flight review go to www.tmfc.org.uk under reviews. Also look two issues back at Model Helicopter World.

When you get to the point to install the throttle servo the instructions say to run the wire through the notch. I might have missed reading something so, just incase it is not mentioned cut a 1/2" piece of silicon tubing then cut it lengthwise and put it on the carbon frame so it will protect the servo lead. Carbon fibers will cut the wire very quickly. Additionaly a switch plate was cut from G10 epoxy glass and bolted onto the main shaft side of the radio gear plate. The big Futaba switch fits perfectly.

Hi everyone,
I'm glad to read Henseleit's 3DNT has made it across the Atlantic to a couple of fans here in the US. I also got mine from Revolution Models in the UK earlier this year (March). It got to CA in 3 days!! I can't tell you how surprised I was that the delivery guy at work had me sign for the package :-)

In any case, I took my time building it and it took me about a week. The frame goes together really quickly but the last details do take some time - and I advise to be diligent. You can't really make any mistakes as the instructions are excellent but if you build precisely and set it up the recommended way, oh my, off it goes.

The only problem I had was with getting the engine to run. I had to put 3 (three!!) head gaskets on my engine for my 12 NiCd celled starter to make it. I'm also using a K&B 4520 (has idlebar) so that I can run the engine rich.

You can see some picture of the build here.

Flying it is incredible. It's a bit twitchy (but a bit of a Exponential alleviates the problem) but it flies like on rails. You point it and it goes there (so, no more excuses - I had to learn that too). It's preciseness is rediculous and definately needs my attention at all times. I've learned a lot quickly.

Parts.
They are VERY reasonable. Unfortunately, the only way to get parts is through the manufacturer directly (www.henseleit.com) which can take about 2 weeks, so it's wise to order some ahead of times (unfortunately, each crash is not the same, but main shaft, bearings, tail boom, etc., are the usual items). You will NOT break the frame - nobody has done it!

So, everyone, enjoy this phantastic helicopter. We are allowed to brag about it - I believe it's just _that_ good :-)

Oliver,

My understanding in talking with Chris at Revolution Models was that he stocked an extensive list of parts for the 3D NT. You mentioned that you had to order them directly from Jan Henseleit. Any further input?

Scott

Stein,

Hope your receiver arrives soon. Here in the U.S., those types of items seem readily available.

Scott (smorrison),

You're right, Chris @ Revolution Models DOES stock an extensive parts list. I just got the parts list from Jan Henseleit directly and since I have a friend in Germany, it's fairly simple for me to order and pay for the parts (since Jan doesn't accept credit cards directly yet, he sends you a bill).
