Look at this: http://www.ronlund.com/Merchant2/me...t_Code=VAR11_86 Add these to some digi calipers, say from MSCDirect.com, and you've got a nice set-up.

my two cents...

check out this link. I ordered the 8" digi's and they are worth every penny. at $60 you won't find a better price anywhere. get the vario caliper posts from ricks and you will be good to hook. the calipers can be used for so much more. if you wnat tips pm me

while I haven't looked at the Sears catalog
lately, there are lots and lots of lookalike
tools out there.

A friend of mine has a $15 pair of digital calipers.
They are NOT the same as my $90 Mitutoyo
calipers.

Whether the extra value is there, well, thats
up to the individual.

I just went to my local truckstop and went to the $4.97 tool bin and picked out a set that had a small and a large plastic caliper a metal straight edge and a tape measure all metric and std the calipers are probabally not the most accurate but as long as you use the same one you will always be able to have pushrods the same length that way you have more $$$$$$$ for upgrade opps. and it can go in your box and you don't have to worry about it

Push Rod Measuring Tool

smegs

I bought the Vario tool at RIck's like Al has previously mentioned. They work great and as others have said buy a dial caliper of the "quality" you can afford and you are all set. The Vario ball link tool is easily removed so that you can use the calipers for other measurements. I currently don't have the digital calipers but have a nice Starrett with a 0-100 reading dial that does a great job.

One thing to remember on the accuracy thing is that when you turn a ball link it usually moves about 5 thousandths so it is pretty easy to get them the same length without a "super precision set" of calipers.

I have those Vario things and to be honest,
75% of the time I dont use them.

I simply directly measure the inside distance
of the exposed rod or the in/out ball link distance.

Of course, the fact that that's how Hirobo
measures the length is a factor in that. If I ran
other machines, I'd probably use the Vario things
more.

Tapered ball links

z11355

I am sure you can measure the links in that manner if all the ball links are of the same manufacturer and type.

What I have found is that the TT ball links have a tapered end and you have to be really careful to get an accurate measurement. Also, without the vario tool you have to make sure the caliper tips are aligned properly or you will get an inaccurate measurement. Furthermore, you have to hold the rod while making sure the dial caliper doesn't move while taking the measurement. With the vario tool all you have to do is put the links on the rods to get an accurate measurement. I believe the vario tool is only about $10 bucks and well worth the money.

I believe that1 turn on the links can mean about 1 degree of pitch in the rotor system. It would seem that the "inner hole where the balls ride in the ball link" of measurement system would be more consistent and accurate.
