Thunder Tiger Raptors 30-90 - Imperio > New failure today

Finally was able to get out today and attempt my 4th flight as a newbie with a Raptor. Midway through the flight the engine quit. After a quite hairy landing for a beginner, I looked it over and all appeared fine. Got the starting gear out and it would crank and crank but not start up. Noticed then that the glow driver was showing 0 volts. Thought at first the battery was dead, but then tried with a new plug and it worked fine. Changed out the plug and then saw two small screws lying on the ground beside the skids. Having just built a new Raptor 50 (the flying 30 was an ARF) the screws did not look familiar and I could not figure out where they would have come from (and why two would be lying there side by side). After looking again they were from the engine crankcase cover! The other two had fallen out already (assume during the flight) and now the cover was hanging out just held on by the friction of the fuel! So, I've now got something new to add to my preflight checklist. I've been good about checking linkages and such but never assumed the engine itself would fall apart.

Now I've just got to find a LHS that carries metric screws.

I did get to hover nose in and fly some circuits during the flight. Although not relevant to this forum I am very, very impressed with Real Flight and the level to which it has prepared me for the 'real thing'.

hmmm, that's something I think I'll check before and after each flight from now on. I'm a newbie also, just put my first gallon through my Raptor 30 the other day!! Still doing hovering and control exercises with training hoop on, but it's all FUN!!

Now if only the wind would die down so I could get out more to fly!!

Also, I dont have a sim so I've been doing this all by myself and a few great sites like this one to learn from... I'm surprised it isn't as hard as it first appears to control a rc heli, just takes some getting used to.. getting easier all the time!!

Take Care,
RaptorHelius!!

Check out Ace's website....they have a list of areas that should be checked out on the Raptor. The back plate bolts and others are included on that list. I had the same thing happen to me.....well something similar. The head bolts came loose on mine..........
