Hello guys.
a friend of mine got a used Stylus.
after flying for a few flights, he turned on the Tx for another flight and got a "BACKUP ERROR" note, and since then the radio's software has gone crazy - some switches done respond, switch numbers are mixed (i.e. sw3 is actually sw11 etc).
we are not sure what caused this, but heard from another flier that knew someone in the past that had it happen to him too, and he called Airtronics and they talked him through somekind of a reset or calibration of some sort, and fixed this.

does anyone have any idea what this might be or how to fix it ?

Woody218, is that certain 100% ?
also, can we do it ourselves or does it have to go back to Airtronics ?
thanks.

"Japan" mode

Its gone into "Japan" mode. The default programming.

This sometimes happens when the internal battery is low or other situation that causes a boot up error. There is a reset procedure but its a bit of a pain. Not something you want to be doing all the time. Also, the battery is soldered in. Again, a bit of a pain to replace. If you suspect that it was indeed a low internal battery (you bought it used? how old is it?) I would send it in. The battery is good for 5yrs ideally.

You could go through the reset but if the battery is low you'll just have it happen all over again.

Do a search here on RunRyder. I thought I saw somebody post the reset and battery replacement procedures. Get a GOOD tech to do the work if you decide to tackle it yourself.

Stylus reset

I went through something similar with mine, too. The good folks at Airtronics put in a new battery, recalibrated the radio, and shipped it back to me for about $35.00. In my case it was caused by my changing the position of two of the switches. Once power is disconnected to the main PC board, it defaults to "J" mode and wont work properly until recalibrated. Hope this helps. steve.

Stylus

The fellow I talked with said it was possible to get it into J mode if you don't have the card seated correctly in place also. steve.

The same thing happened to me the very first time I turned my radio on and several times after that. After the forth time it happened in about 9 months I finaly got them to exchange mine for a new radio and heli card for all the problems. Good customer service form Airtronics. I love the radio but it sounds like Airtronics might have a design problem with the Stylus. It sounds like lots of people have had this problem well before the 5 year backup batery runs out. I have had my replacement Stylus for 6 or 7 years now and no problems.

Resurrecting an old thread for some additional info:

Switching on a Stylus with the Memory Card in the slot can, under certain circumstances, cause a 'Backup Error' reset to 'Japan' mode -- in which some features disappear and stick recalibration becomes necessary.

It should be switched on ONLY with a feature card (HELI, ACRO or GLID) in the slot or no card at all.

I have the reset procedure if you can't find it. I would appreciate if you would search for it first as the only way I have to get it to you is to dumb thumb it in

Thanks for the offer GMP but Terry Moore has already shot it over to me.

Thanks Terry.

PS -- Here's a bunch more Stylus-related threads.
