e-Electric Batteries & Chargers > Triton charger problem?

Hi all

I just got the triton charger, but when I try to charge my battery, I set it to charge at 1A, when it starts to charge, i see the current is going up, but every 2 minutes or so, the LCD would show 0.0A for like 5 seconds, and then goes back to normal, is this normal?
this happens when charging both lithium and Nimh, I am using the Cosel power supply (13V, 13amps), so i am sure the power is ok, and i have double check my connection, everything is fine

another thing is when i set it to charge my lithium 1850mah at 1A, it only goes up to 0.9A, and this is a fully discharged battery

any ideas?

I hope it's normal and expected - 'cause mine does it too!

I just took it as indication of when it was charging and when it was cooling/waiting.

hi graeme

its good to hear that i am not the only one, now it does it every minute and half, i don't think this is normal, because my fan never turn on, so its not getting hot

maybe other triton users will give us a better idea

ok i did more reading, seems like this is normal, triton checks the no-load voltage when it drops to 0A, but to me , this is a very weird design, because the total charge time will always be longer way longer due to this
what do you guys think?

Mine too

This is actually part of how the peak detection circuit works. This may cause a longer overall charge duration, but will ensure a higher peak voltage and capacity.

I too will get .9A on a 1A charge at startup- Not sure why it does this one.

The fan seems to only come on when you use higher charge voltages, or when you're using a discharge cycle. My fan doesn't come on with a 1A charge, but will always run on 5A or discharge.

Try these tests with a Triton....

Triton owners:

Notice no matter what current you discharge your battery pack at the noisy fan is always on? .....even at the lowest setting!

Try charging a Li-Ion 7.2 V 1200 mah battery pack at 1.2A and see how far your charge current goes to (use a discharged 6.0 V battery). Will it ever go to 1.2A? Mine went to 600 - 700 mah max.

Discharge a sealed lead acid 12 V battery to 11 volts or so and make a note of how much capacity was taken out of the battery (mah)...then charge it back up and see what the Triton puts back into the battery. The amount should be at least what is taken out. Good luck.

These were the reasons why I returned my Triton charger after 6 months for a refund.
Hobby services sent me 2 new chargers plus the original and they all did the same thing. They refused to admit that they had a problem.
