Thunder Tiger Raptors 30-90 - Imperio > Raptor 30 mainshaft bearings?

I have just broken down my Raptor 30 ....... it has been making a nasty rasping noise in flight and a rumbling noise as the blades spun down?

I suspected the one way bearing in the main gear but no ..... when I took off the main gear and spun the main shaft in the upper and lower bearings I could feel the horrible notchy bearings were the problem.

I understand that these bearings are available as part bag PV0093 (2 main bearings and a clutch bell shaft bearing) but as I have only had my Raptor a year I wondered if I should try and replace them with a better quality bearing ........ the size is 10x19x5

Any suggestions on a good source of quality bearings or should I just go ahead and us the Thunder Tiger replacements again?

What are your thoughts ...........?

Thanks BF.

Bearings

Thanks Lwnemesis - I will check locally as you suggest, did your bearings do the same thing?

The Thunder Tiger bearings are a reasonable price but I don't want to split the frames every time they wear out. I have had one crash with the Raptor and I realize that that could have dealt the fatal blow to this set of bearings ........ if I had know what the problem was a couple of weeks ago I could have bought some at the Toledo show - my buddy got some great main bearings for his Falcon there........

Bigfish. The number one cause of bearing failure is lack of lubrication. Buy a "Greaser" from Pete'sRc(www.petesrc.com) and grease your bearings with a grease marked with EP( extreme pressure).Any quality synthetic automotive wheel bearing grease will be of this type. Make sure when you lube the new bearings that all the original grease is forced out. The stuff that is in the bearing is not grease for lubrication purposes, but a very light duty grease that is used to hold the balls in location during assembly of the bearing, and to prevent oxidation. When I've crashed my Raptor and the spindle or mainshaft was bent, I'll always replace the upper bearing and check the lower for damage. Doesn't take much of a hit to dent the inner bearing race, only to cause a bearing failure later.

The greaser works by pressure. Under pressure, the new goes in, the old comes out, along with dirt, etc.

New Bearings

I called into the local hobby store today for some new mainshaft bearings ........ they were out of stock of TT part bag PV0093 ...

So I spent a little more and got two X-Cell mainshaft bearings (MA0183) ......

They are the same size 10x19x5 - and hopefully a little better quality than the standard Raptor bearings?

At least I can get the Raptor back in the air without a wait!
