e-Electric Batteries & Chargers > First LI-PO charge...help

Hi,

I finished my hornet II and was wondering what the best way to charge my new li-po pack would be as far as charge current. I have an e-tec 3cell 1200 and a triton. I have the thermal probe too. I read in the manual that says 400ma for first charge. So it would take around 3 hours right? Just want to make sure I don't cheese anything. heheh Should I set the timer to 3 hours or a little more?
ooh, also...what is the recommended length for a charge cable, I searched but could not find an answer. Right now its almost 2 feet. I think this might be too long.

Sorry for all the questions, I'm a newbee to this

Thanks much in advance,
Kalman

Li-Po Charging with the Triton

A charge current of 400ma seems low but if thats what the manufacturer suggests go and try it. The Triton will take much more then 3 hours to charge it.....depending on when it starts to reach the max voltage and back down the current. You should be able to charge it at 1C but I doubt the Triton will allow the charge current to go that high (even though that is what you selected).

The thermal probe is worthless in my opinion. The Triton charge cycles are not aggressive enought and the battery never even gets warm. Even if you put the probe on and one battery is defective and overheats.....what if the probe is not on that cell???? Interesting. In my experience with the Triton (for 6 months until I returned it for a refund), the probes design was terrible...I couldn't find one battery that it would fit no matter what the setting was.

A 2 foot charge cable is too long in most cases. Be sure to use a good quality stranded cable at least 16 - 18 gauge.

Post your results after you try it.

Thanks hpilotrc,

YAH, I never thought the probe would only sense the pack its touching. I will try it out and post. I hear good things and bad about the triton. One bad experience so far was charging a 1000 nimh pack for my micro rs4 that screwed up, I didnt catch it in time and the pack was so hot I could not touch it. prob wont last long now. It did take over 1000 mah on the last charge but ??? I could have done something wrong there though, one of my first charges with it.

Thanks again for the help and I will post how it worked.
