e-JR Voyager E > Servos for Voyager E

My friend has a Voyager E with the Hitec mini digital servos (5245) and his heli flies rock solid. The servos are fast and have plenty of torque. The fact that they are digital adds to precision and the holding power also. He is also using a Futaba 401 with the 9253 digital servo and an Astro Flight brushless motor.

Has anyone had any experience in comparing a Voyager E setup with the Hitec digital mini servos against the Hitec HS-85's and HS-81 on the tail? The reason I ask is because I would like to make my Voyager E lighter by using the smaller Hitec servos, but I don't want to trade weight for quality. I am also thinking of using the Futaba 240 with the HS-81 and the Hacker brushless setup.

Any input would be great. Thanks.

I can't give you a direct comparison as I've not used the digitals on my VE. I think the digital mini's are the 5425's not the 5245's, but in any case the digital minis are only slightly heavier than the HS 85's I use (84 oz vs .80 oz) so if they fit they should be great. The 5245's are also digital but are NOT minis, and are a good bit heavier at 1.12 oz each. I use digitals on my Venture and they ARE nice and solid.

I use HS 85's and an 81 on my Voyager and am very happy with them as well. As for the 401/9253 combo...thats a great combo, but it puts a full sized digital servo on the tail, which may be a bit of overkill. The HS 81 while not digital, is plenty fast for my flying style at .11 sec @ 4.8 volts and it's more than an once lighter than the 9253 at .58 oz (I'm flying with the GY240 on the VE and find it works great with the HS 81).

As for the Hacker motor...you can have mine...right after you kill me and take it from my cold dead hand !!!

I am planning on making the switch to mini digitals this spring on my VE. I currently fly with the 85mg's and an 81 tail (240 gyro).

I am considering the following digital mini servos;

Hitec 5245 weight 1.12 oz. torque/speed 4.8v 61/.15
$49.99 6.0v 76/.12

Futaba 9650 weight 0.92 oz. 4.8v 50/.14
$59.99 6.0v 62.5/.11

Multiplex 65375 weight 1.06 oz. 4.8v 35/.11
$72.99 6.0v 44/.08

I think I am leaning to the Hitec or Futaba with a Multiplex on the tail with a "de-cased" 401 or 240 gyro. I wonder if we can get one of the BEC (either U or S) to make us bec's that put out 6v??

Hey bigTim,

Just out of curiosity, why not the 5425 minis. The speeds are identical to the 5245's and weight is .84 as compared to the 1.12 of the 5245. Torque is less, but still not bad at 48.6 @ 6v.

Inquiring minds want to know !!

Ralph, I just looked at Hitec's site and I can't find any 5425's listed only the 5245's ... The only 54 series servo they list is a 5475 or something like that as a "sport digital".

I checked on the 6v U-bec and it is available for $36 + shipping of $3 from Kool Flight Systems now... I have had excellent service from Jeff and will certainly have one of these next week to try in the VE.

bigTim,

Sorry, I had the numbers all crossed up I think. The 5245's are the mini digitals and I was looking at a database listing that had them reversed. Sorry 'bout that .

Just to clarify the Hitec servo descriptions, the Hitec 5245's ARE the digital minis (as stated in my original post).

I am still undecided on my servo choices, but I am leaning toward the HS-85's and the HS-81 on the tail, mainly to save weight and money.

Thanks for the input everyone.
