Well today was a beutiful day, +12C and only a couple of clouds in the sky, so I of course went out flying. After the second tank, I was spooling down with the motor running at an idle. Just before the blades quit turning I heard a clunk, and the tail blades started turning...well my first thought is F#@&ing clutch. So I spun the blades and I could hear the clutch hanging up. I dropped the motor out and inspected the clutch...it looked perfect. Since I had just lost my training gear two days ago, I decided that enough was nough for the day and brought it home. Upon closer inspection, the spacing between one clutch ear was 5 thou larger than the other. Under magnification it became evident. A hairline crack 3/4 the way through! So now...what caused this? I thought. I have the spacer in place. I have the perfect spacing between clutch and liner using a JR liner, and it still broke! I'm beginning to think that the material is not adequate. Any other thoughts? Thanks for listening to me ramble for a while.

On my Raptor I had to shim my motor .032" to get the Clutch Shoe to center in the Clutch Bell, (one millimeter is .040"),,, .032" is a lot in my book !!

Raptor Clutch Fix

I broke my clutch after the 5th tank. I bought Rick's Heavy Duty clutch ($30) and a concept 60 Clutch liner. I've flown all last summer without a problem. I also added the 3rd bearing upgrade to the start shaft /Clutch bell.

Just remember you mileage may vary!

Winger

I believe the heavy duty clutches are made out of spring steele and alows them to flex without breaking. I have been flying the HHI in my raptor since the beginning (200+ flights). I have watched my brother actually force the arms of the clutch back together after they "sprung" and he has been flying it for at least 100 flights since.

Clutch

Same as RaptorCop and winger
My first clutch went after 21 flights. I spent the extra bucks and bought a heavy duly clutch. No problems

motor mount shims

ctseaplane,,, when I tried to mount the motor/mount/fan and clutch-shoe in the Raptor's frame and bell, I literally had to force it all to line up the threaded holes in the motor mount with the holes in the side of the frame !!,,,, I pulled it all out to try it again, the second time I first tried lining up the holes in the frame and motor mount but I had to force the clutch bell to the back to get the shoe in the bell !! I have my own milling machine, so I made some shims from aluminum, the shims went between the motor and the motor-mount.
I have read about this misalignment before in RunRyder,,,remember that the gap between the Clutch Shoe and the Bells Liner should not be more than .015" on each side of the Shoe, so anyone's alignment could be off easily !!
