I'm new to this hobby and I don't know everything about it. However when I was on towerhobbies I noticed the radios which contained the word "computer" were significantly more than the others. ry_gooy and I are friends so I'm not discouraging him because he and I are cooperating to see which heli to get.

computer radio

first off i am no pro but i can certainly say this..........

first off you need a computer radio if u want to fly helis......
second off BUY THE BEST RADIO YOU CAN AFFORD AT THE TIME!
believe me when i say this cause i am one of those ppl that first off bought a JR622.......used it for 2 months........didnt like it then bought a JR652.............out grew that in about 3 months..........now i have bought a JR8103 PCM radio and i dont feel i will out grow this one at all....besides the out growing thing i also like the feel of the 8103 alot better.....I am years and years from out growing this one..........trust me spend alittle bit more and you will save alot in the long run!!!!! as i am witness to that........ heck if you do the math i could of went out and bought a JR10x right off the bat and saved the headache!!!!

just my 2 cents worth

"I'm new to this hobby and [...]"

That much was already clear. Perhaps you should more time asking questions before you start answering questions? Nothing personal really, lots of people do it. And they do it often enough that I've gotten tired of seeing bogus information in forums like this one... so I kinda went off the other day.

I'd hate for your friend to give up on computer radios thinking that they are "special" and "extremely expensive" when in fact they are the standard, and a suitable entry-level radio costs only a little bit more than a non-computer radio (also called a "pot" radio because they use potentiometers instead of digital processing). Very, very few people use pot radios today, because they're so limited. The one remaining pot heli radio might cost a bit less than an entry-level computer radio, but it's a false savings - people who buy them end up throwing them away and buying computer radios soon after. 1crny obviously knows exactly what I'm talking about - and the cheap radios he started with weren't even pot radios, those are actually computerized.

If you buy cheap, you buy twice, and that can get pretty expensive too.

actually freestyle,
they call em pot radios, cause ya gotta be smoking some really good chit to think ya can make one of em work in a modern heli.
the guy says he can't afford 400+ or - to get a good radio like the rd 6000, if that is so, how can he ever afford to buy another radio in 6 weeks, when he gives up on the cheepie. aint nuthin in life so frustrating as having to spend good money after bad, just cause ya tried to be cheep.
oh yeah,
from a guy that has electric helis and planks, they aint the cheep way to get started. price extra power packs so ya can keep flying instead of waiting for the one ya got to cool down enough to accept a proper charge, then waiting for it to charge. and yes, the electrics have to be built so light to work, that things break both often and easily.
just a rough guesstimate, but a glow heli, 30 size, will probably cost ya in the neighborhood of 60% of what an electric will , to get to the same skill level.

Learn from my mistake

Buy a computer radio, I bought cheap and had to spend more money to get a better one later.
