e-Electric Batteries & Chargers > Charging NI-MH batteries with a Supernova 250S

I have JUST bought Supernove 250S battery charger (14th Feb) and after reading the instructions find out to my horror that you CANT charge or discharge NI-MH batteries under the automatic mode. This was the sole main reason I bought this charger for its automatic mode as I am an aged pensioner and most deffinately require that most of the complicated setting up proceedures be done for me.I am afraid my brain box these days isn't as sharp as it was 30 years ago.I would like your opinion and advice as to what I should do, as the advertising to sell this charger NEVER mentioned anything about this deficiency ???

Actually, that is fairly common. The charge algorithm is likely optimised for sub C NiCds. It is also a tad more difficult to detect when to terminate a charge on NiMH cells because their voltage peak isn't as well defined.

I wouldn't sweat it.. Just set it to 1.5C or so.

However...

Cells vary a lot in their capacity, design goals and construction within a given chemistry, so you may well find there are some NiMH cells that do charge okay on Auto. HR2600s come to mind...

Yeah, what 3DManiac said . . . I have a SuperNova, and a lot of my batteries are NiMh as well as NiCd, and I do EVERYTHING in manual (possibly with the exception of Zagi packs on my "non-heli" days when I just need to charge 'em FAST! and don't care that much . . )

I have a pro peak supernova charger and i charge everything i have on auto mode without a problem what is the inputt power supply you are using

3300 ni mh 10 cell
2400 nicad 8 cell
1700 nicad 4 cell
2400 nicad 4 cell
600 ni mh 4 cell

All charged on the supernova on auto mode others without a problem

use auto here... no problems

I setup all my batteries (nimh/nicd) for manual mode, but tend to use auto because of the 'one push' ease-of-use. I've been charging batteries for about six months and all continue to peak above their rated capacity. I cycle them several times a week. Based on this personal experience, I tend to disagree with the analogy to the chevy idiot lights. I tend to believe these idiot lights were created by some pretty smart electrical engineers. If I wanted to use manual mode all of the time, I wouldn't have spent the extra money and bought a supernova.

Then again, maybe six months isn't long enough. Maybe the potential abuse I'm giving my batteries by using this feature won't start showing up until much later.

By then I'll probably move on to duralite's...

I have found with the supernova that if i do a manual charge with the ni mh batterys the supernova only lets me select charge rate of 1c
If i leave it on automatic mode the supernova charges the ni mh battery up to 2c and i have found that the charge that is put in the battery is far and above the rated capasity of the battery on a 700 mah battery i normaly get 785 ahc so thats why i leave it on auto mode
