Hi! I'm doing a science project and what I'm doing is building a mock up of NASA's Rocket-Based-Combined-Cycle (RBCC) engine. My initial plan was to put it in a slow speed wind tunnel at NASA to get drag data. They will not let me use the wind tunnel so I need another idea. If any of you have some ideas as to what I can do with a fiberglass mock up of an RBCC engine, please tell me, I would really appreciate it. I really would like something I can extract data from. Science fair judges CRAVE numbers and graphs. Again, if you have any ideas, please let me know. Please note, the actual engine is designed to fly from sub-sonic to hypersonic (> mach 5, the goal is to mach 23), there is NO WAY I can replicate those conditions and try to simulate a burn with this mockup. The fiberglass would not be able to withstand the heat nor the force the super/hyper sonic air would cause. Thank you!

Sounds like quite a mouth full

You could simulate the changes in "stages" by injecting compressed air to simulate operation but simulating pressure ratios over 2/1 (supersonic flow) will be tricky. The compressor/storage tank will need to be large enough to allow steady state operation at each test point (at least several seconds). But I would think it could all be done at near ambient temp conditions with internal pressure under 100 PSI (and lot's of correction factors for compressibility and Reynolds Number affects). Good luck

I built a volcano in 5th grade. You put vinegar and baking soda in it and it erupted!!! I got an A+

Make a Tesla Coil!!

I built two Tesla coils. A "Big TC" with a measured output of 1.5 Million volts! Big ol spark. And a small battery one with a 25,000 volt output.

Real easy to build and fun! The kids played with the small one. The big one was only powered up in a steel shipping container. Weee!

If you apply Bernouli' principle, you can scale down the test object and use "realistic" values with compressed air.

Where would I get compressed air from and what data would I be able to extract from it? Also, how would I extract the data?

well, not sure if its the same thing, but i would think it its....you can get a 78cu 3500psi tank for like 80 bucks...its for paintball guns, but dont know why it wouldnt work. Got to www.paintballgear.com and look under air tanks...To get it filled, any where that you play paintball should have tanks to fill them..
