heres the vid ... i did not have time to edit it, so its over 20mb for now ..

www.voy-tech.net/files/bellcrashbig1.wmv

tail drive shaft sheared, forced to do an emergency auto, ran out of rotor speed too quickly ... here is a pic for now (blades are still spinning down in this one .. ) more later including video .... and further details on what happened ... at least its only fuselage damage and a bent main shaft ... i dont think i will be using the bleu couplers again, as it seems to be the cause of this incident ... ill stick with the dogbone drive from now on ... i will post pics of the damage and more detail later .... im still not 100% sure what actually let go where and when ...

on the onboard video (same run as crash vid) you can hear clicking and snapping, could be the tail coupler claws smacking around with the blue coupler missing ... (why would it pop out ? .... ) more on this later ...

AWWWW F&$#2

I dont know what to say,

my wife and i were here and both watching the video and we both feel very sorry for that loss. I also lost my airwolf due to a tail failure, but i was not as fortunate to get my heli back. mine was never recovered. at least based on what u said and what i heard, the turbine was still working, so it looks like just major cosmetic work and some minor mech. that was some recovery you did. i dont know that i would have ever pulled that off. i wish you luck with your rebuild.

well,

all i can say is that its comming along real slow. after i put the jet cat back together, i havnt touched the hughes. my next step is to start the painting prep process and then finish the rivets. after that it should be ready for the paint booth. im still waiting on the pipe and some tear drop fittings for the lights which are supposed to come from josef. but that hasnt come in yet. How about yours. any paint yet?

there isnt any.

i messed up when i did the skids and never ran the cable through. so now im forced to put them right under the doors left and right with those fittings. i figure its my only option now. i even have a stuck broken drill bit about 4 inches long stuck in the skid that broke while i was tring to drill a canal to run the cable through the dried epoxy

lol, yea, there is a thread on scalerchelis.com on autos, and i said it would really suck if i had to auto this brick .... i always figured it might be due to a turbine failing or somehting .. but turning into a blender like that was completely unexpected ... it was tough to decide when to gut the throttle, and how to bring it in ... not that much tim to think about what to do in the middle of all that ! .. at least my turbine and mechanics survived .... i think i will just build a new fuse .. i already have to buy new landing gear and windows as is if i wanted to repair, and that would run me over $250 alone ... i will probably put the damaged fuse for sale on ebay if anyone wants to fix it up ...

Stay with the blue couplers....

The vario dog bones failed on my huey after about 20 flights. They are plastic. They might be fine if lubricated every 2-4 hours of operation if possible.

I am staying with blue couplers though.

my two cents.

after some discussins with others who have used the blue couplers, i think i know where i will go .. seems like the blue couplers can actually be squezed out under heavy load ... Vario sells optional springg-rings that go around the claw couplers (they are even grooved for these rings) that would prevent disengagement of the 2 claw couplers, and would help keep the blue rubber piece inside ... also, a friend of mine suggested then sealing the whole joint with heavy duty heat shrink tubing ....

i hope to start on a new bell 230 soon ..

Man, oh man, oh man!

That could have been a total write off.
You did a hell of a job bringing that chunk of lead down.
Like trying to auto a lawnmower I would guess.
Was that your son in the video?
Did you just want to tell him "I KNOW IT CRASHED!!!!!!!"?
At least you kept the really, really 'spensive parts from getting trashed.
Good luck with the next one.

yea, thats my son, hes 3 now .. he asked me to do the crash again ... man, i do wish the camera was still in the heli when it went in !, the few hundred $ would have been worth it for the potentially awesome footage !, maybe next time ... i think its going to be another 230 to replace this one ...

man, and to think i was concerned about the tail drive on the NH-90 .. hey cloudmax, did you see the field in the vid ? come out and fly with us when the weather warms up ...

later ,

t/r claw drive

Morning Wojtek

Sorry about your loss. I loved that colour scheme. Was it the forward or the aft blue thingy that went missing? For me, on my Jetcopter, it was the forward one. Fortunately the damage was not too great.

thanks

it was the forward one. In the video (the onboard part) you can actually hear the claws clattering against eachother because of the blue piece being missing .... the metal-metal even caused enough electrical noise to afect the video on the camcorder !! im really surprised i did not get hits on the RX ...

well....., maybee i did, and failsafe held position as programed, so if hits were under 1 sec each, i would not have noticed ... which means that if i was running an FM instead of a PCM set up, i might have notices the glitching, and landed before losing the tail ..... another FM or PCM dilema .... would be nice if there was a devide that could keep statistics on radio hits on a PCM RX ..... i might set up a warning light on all my PCM RXes to work off of a spare channel, and set PCM failsafe to activate it ...
