i believe it is better to use the search engine because you may stumble across new ideas even if they aren't relevant to your question. Also I find my questions are answered faster using the search engine than if i were to post and wait for soemone to answer.

Sometimes it's way easier to ask than ferret through the reams of sometimes useless stuff which comes from a search.

I used the search today for info on aluminium servo arms and came up with a lot of stuff I didnt want to see. I finally found what I wanted in the last post.

Remember most of us on here were newbies at one time and probably asked the same questions.

But yes it gets frustrating to see the same question asked that was asked last week :-D

here's my 2 cents...

i'm sure i've been guilty of asking a question thats been discussed a ba-zillion times. but, i do try and do a search on the topic before i ask. sometimes, there are specifics that do not get covered in previous posts. also i've noticed that there are some who may or maynot have paid any attention to a previous thread that by chance happen to come across and read. i see this all the time when an opinion about a product and or set up question is asked.

ultimately, i realize that it's a pain to have to re-write an answer or suggestion again and again but how about posting the link? i find that to be the most helpfull because 1) it could of been a thread found with a completely different keyword and thus not being able to find, 2) can get both the pilot and helpers to refer to a previous post and discuss a specific question or thought that may not have been clearly addressed.

i just think a reply like:

Try this:

Go to the upper section of this page where you see a line under the RunRyder logo that starts witth the underlined words MY HOME. On that line you will see the word SEARCH underlined. Click on it. That will open a search screen. There you can enter the word "magazines" and you will find a very large number of threads and even polls that deal with this topic.

I find this a great way to review information on a number of topics that I have had questions about in the past, and it saves a lot of repetitious typing for a lot of great contributors to this form.

is borderline sarcasm and thats what people dont like. it shows for someone who doesnt like to type, a simple link would have been a lot less typing... or better yet, exercise self control and dont bother responding, let those who are willing to "re-type or forward links" help out.

Personally, I wouldn’t have taken offense to the suggestion to search. I thought Optech’s response was totally reasonable and you gotta love opinion posts anyway!

However, there are a couple of things that may improve this in the future:

An example of using the search function in the Help section may educate a few new users on the capabilities of search, and a recommendation by Mark to use it before posting questions would allow people to just refer to his post.

Another thing that frustrates me at times is the inability to enter an exact string into the search function. For example, a search on the words “9Z battery mod” brings up 10 threads that all contain the words “9Z”, ”battery”, and “mod” . At times when I am searching for a certain sentence that I know is in a post, I get so many hits that it is frustrating to manually search them all to find the information I am looking for.

Now I’m not complaining, I think this is a great forum and there is an unbelievable amount of information here, but the ability to refine searches would be an improvement. Maybe this capability exists; I just haven’t been able to find it yet. When I search on “refine search”, I get 3 hits. On “search”, I get 150 pages, so I’m not getting anywhere with my search and I guess I’ll have to keep searching!

Now since I’ve taken the time to post, what transmitter should I buy, who makes the best servos for that Rappie, and should I go PPM or PCM?

sheeesh!!!

I know i have asked a stupid question that has been answered a million times, but i will repost it. Why becouse things change. Also we get new people that might have a different opinion on something or things get upgraded. Hear is a perfect example.. If i were to do a search on which servo should i buy for my shuttle. I would see alot of past posts that say get the gy401 combo with the 9253 servo...
But as of last week the gy401 servo now has an upgraded servo 9254.

so i dont think it is wrong to refer somebody to do a search, but i do think it is wrong to ask that person not to ask the question.. and why are you guys even whining, it is your choice to look at the post, nobody else to blame but yourself.

sheesh!!

If Optech had come in and said something like "quit wasting our time, you lazy newbie" or "I'm sick of answering the same friggin question over and over" or ANYTHING like that, I would say a newbie might be justified in "going off" like JG did.

But Optech was extrememly cordial and what he said was true and I've said it myself . . . . just do a search . . . you might find your answer and more.

Many people contribute to these types of posts and SOME of these same people don't mind typing it out over and over but some do. So if you do a search, you will actually end up with MORE info because you will get to read the contribution of those who don't feel like saying all over again - AND you won't be wasting everyone's time.

However, if a search turns up very old and possibly outdated data, hey, by all means, ask away!!!

Optech took the high road and stayed there even after an unwarranted attack. Good job Optech and don't be afraid to do it again.

Oh and BTW I beleive it is this board's policy (or at least a strong suggestion) to do a search prior to posting. For proof just hold your mouse over the "Create New Topic" button.

Advising use of the search engine

Davo,

You should first run a search on this topic as it has come up on several occasions in the past!

In all seriousness the only problem I have is when OPTECH wrote (I am going to let that one slide). I am not saying that JG heli was wright either. But as for that comment I accept that as a threat, and that would be uncalled for. What are you going to do if you don’t let it slide, is what I would like to know

"I'm with RSL_Mongoose on this one. That is as simply stated as possible. If you are irritated with something and are "sick" of repeat posts, then just don't read them."

I can also say just dont read the suggestion some of us give to use the Search feature.

What a bunch of whinging whining moaning old women.

Here's a thought. Since he was a newbie, maybe he didn't know there was a search option?

IMHO,

I don't think there is a need to remind anyone to use the search.
Heck, there's the old saying "There are no stupid questions"
People use search on their own anyway after a while and even
when some excited enthused new person asks an old question
at a fun fly or at the field , you don't shoot him down do you ?
No, you bite your lip put on a smile and answer it
