I asked a relative newbie to try using the search engine to find some answers and he basically went off.

Is it, or Is it not wrong to ask a person to take a little time to look for answers. Especially to "Brand vs Brand" threads.

I think more people should use the search engine to find out about topics, instead of bringing up a topic that has been discussed 1000 times before. The search engine is avaliable for a reason!!!

Use it guys.

I feel informing ANYONE to use the Search feature is appropriate. I have seen members with numerous posts ask a question that has been asked and answered before. When I notice a post with a question and I know it has been discussed before sometimes I do a search and I inform the member to do a search otherwise I will answer the question.

I feel that using the search function is proper etiquette.......

The person asking the question has to take some responsibility for learning how to help himself/herself as much as possible.....

By using the search function, more info will be obtained than asking the question for the 1000 and one time........where the answer might be short.....

optech,
You're right- the start of any question should be to search for past discussions. If the searcher can't take the time to fumble through some past discussions, freak 'em.
After someone has established a position, and then asks informed questions, we all will be helpful.
In my opinion, of course.

I agree that some topics have been discussed far too often and don't need to be dug up unless someone has particular questions to ask. There are polite ways to say to some that they should do a search first. Optech's post was polite, I saw a post by jb_turner the other day that just said "Do a search" which I thought was rude. At least if the person did take the time to do a search and get a little info first and ask specific questions then I can't see a problem with that, rather than just I want a heli, what should I get type questions.

Usually I do a quick search myself and list a couple of topics that may point the person in the right area. Only because I've used the search funtion a hell of a lot and know what search criteria to use to find the results I want. Unless you've done it a lot it can be hard to troll through all the info to find that nugget you were looking for.

That's my opinion anyway

Drunk Monk,

It may have sounded rude but I got to the point, educated and informed the person asking the question in 3 words about using the Search feature.

True, but you could see the guy was new, so why not just be polite about it. Also he said he had done a search but couldn't find the info he needed. When I did the search I found pages upon pages of threads, 99% were irrelevant. I agree telling someone to use the search function is a good idea I just think you could have worded it better.

Good point. Might be wise to offer some keywords to get 'em started with.

I use the search engine first. If i can't find it, i'll ask. If i do find it and am confused, i quote it or mention it in my inquiry post just so people know.

Guys, this is a great poll and all but it doesn't help me much with my urgent question, should I get a Sceadu or a Raptor? Also I'm not sure whether to get a Fury or an X-Spec or P-Max with a JR or Futaba radio powered by a YS or OS or TT engine started by a Dynatron or Minimax with Robbe or K&S or Vario or X-cell shafts?

Anybody help me?

PS. 560 or 601?

I agree with optech. I'm a newbie to both flying and the forum, and naturally have a lot of questions.
As he pointed out, many of the questions have been discussed at great length. I think it is simply lazy to just post your question and expect the experienced flyers to answer - for the 17th time...
Do a little research, yuu most likely get your question answered and on top of that learn a lot of other things as well. (Maybe more than you wanted to know )

Its neither, and both...

The poll is rather vague because it is always "proper" to advise people to use the search engine, and its never "Wrong" to do so...

I think the main concern is not advising people to use the search engine, but being rude or condescending while doing so...

I like it when people advise others to use the search engine and they say soemthing like "I've seen alot of discussion on topic X, search on X,Y, and Z and you'll find a TON of info!"

I DON'T like it when I see replies along the lines of "Hey dork, what do you think the search engine is for?"

I use the search engine all the time and what REALLY ticks me off is after I've tried 57 different iterations of a search string of words, unable to find the info I want and THEN have someone call me a dork for not using the search engine after I post asking for info

Poll

Is it PROPER to post a poll with questions as the answers?

a.) Should the answers be answers?
b.) Should the answers be questions?
c.) Am I confused?

I think it's fine to politely tell people to use the search function, either they may have thought this topic had never been discussed previously or they may just be lazy. Either way, the search function is there for a purpose i.e. stopping the same old discussions coming up time and time again. One thing that annoys me though is that animation of doing a search that people post sometimes, to me that is rude.

Hello everyone. My name is JG_Heli and I am a Newbie.

I am the reason this post was started.

Apparently being a "relative newbie" has its inadequacies, up to and including being "lazy" for not searching before asking a question...

If I can make one brief point of contention:

People learn two ways.
1. On their own (ie. searching threads)
2. Asking questions/advice. (what I did...apparently a big NO-NO to the likes of Optech and A. Bundy)

I sincerely apologize for being a #2 if it has offended ANYONE, then i sincerely humble myself and offer my wife and her horrible cooking as payment...please really take her.

Life is too short guys..I guess I will chalk it up to learning.

Thanks for everyones input, including Optech.

-JG

PS - Guess How I voted?
