Beginners Corner > a question about exhaust deflectors

?

What effect do exhaust deflectors have on the engines? How does length effect it? The reason I ask is.. I want to make a deflector tube that goes right to the end of my tail boom. Is that possible? What effect would that have on the heli or engine?

Thanks

I would think that it'd create too much backpressure and flood the engine, but I may be wrong. It worked that way on my planks anyway.

on four stroke engines the length is not as big of an issue as it is on a two stroker. however, the typical length exhaust deflector (2-3 inches) wont affect the engines mixutre at all. Exhaust Deflectors dont seem to keep the heli any cleaner, for planks, the deflectors make cleanup much easier, on helis, the exhaust lubricates my T/R =)

deflectors

At our field we have a noise problem, the motors cannot be any louder than 90db, so alot of us run a tube from the end of the muffler. Some of these tubes are short and some are longer up to about 1.5 feet.Using a bigger prop and the tubes make the engines more quiet. The only thing we find is the motors run alot hotter when a bigger prop is used not so much as using the tube.........

The exhaust deflector does affect the tuning of an engine/exhaust system. This is especially true of tuned pipes. Using a Helimax tuned pipe on an OS 32 requires an exhaust deflector for optimum performance. I have not notices any effect on a tuned muffler. KSJ designs their 60 size competition deflectors with a spiral ridge inside so that the exhaust smoke comes swirling out. I was told by the distributor of KSJ products that it was intended to impress the judges :=)

I run them in all my helis and they do make a difference in noise and cleaningness.

Hey,

I use a 5/8 inch diameter auto heater hose on mine. It is about 8 inches long. I havent had any trouble with the engine having it on there. It keeps the heli VERY clean.

If you are using a "long" deflector the important thing is to "disrupt" the "primary" "wave". Using large dia. does this because the wave velocity causes the pressure to be below ambient and air enters the pipe during each pulse eliminating unwanted reflections. Putting a small hole in the "pipe" next to the muffler/pipe outlet will accomplish the same thing. the amount of "leakage" will be unnoticeable.

thanks!

That's what I wanted to know.. I'd like to run the hose or something further back toward the tail to help keep the heli clean. Could it be run all the way back and exit behind the tail?

Somebody mentioned that it helps keep it quieter too?

Take Care
