Thunder Tiger Raptors 30-90 - Imperio > Should I get a Raptor?

I was planning on getting a Raptor 30 after I try to hit China with this Nexus. After all I read about the Wahs and Pufs I don't know if I should. What is the deal with these birds? Are they that bad?

I've been flying mine for over a year and have never heard a woof or a wah.

I love mine (4). Never seen a woof/poof. Had the wawas, easy and cheap to fix if yours has it (shims or slipper). I fly only Raptor 30/50 and Robbe machines now. The Raptor is great, durable, cheap to fix and easy to work on. I say get it. Highest population out there for sure, that speaks for itself.

check out www.raptortechnique.com for a ton of information.

Raptor 60

I just recently built a Raptor 60 and am pretty happy so far. I think for the price, you can't beat it. I would like to own a Vigor, but my wallet says Raptor.

I am very happy with my Raptor. Never any problems with it. No Wah Wah's or woof and poof's.

Get A Raptor!!!

I have two Raptors, the both fly great (with no upgrades needed). As for woofs and poofs, I have never had any. Also, lots of guys I fly with have Raptors. None of them have ever had woof and poof.

Well, actually, one guy did. But he was a brand new pilot with his first heli. We asked him how he balanced his blades. He just looked at us with a dumb look on his face. We did a quick field balance and found they were WAAAAYYYYYY off balance. We slapped on a spare set of my cheap $28 fiberglass blades I am always talking about and guess what? It was as smooth as could be with no problems ever since.

By the way, he wound up buying those blades off me right there on the spot!

Well, you guys have done a lot to stave off my fears. Thank you. I know most of the time you hear the negative aspect of things and not the positive. It is nice to hear the positive.

To tell you the truth, I hope to bury this Nexus soon so I can get a Raptor!

The Raptor is great. The biggest problem it has is beginners tend to buy it and then when they have a problem they blame the heli.

The Raptor would be the fourth kit I have built and the third I have flown. I am not worried about silly beginner mistakes, I am worried about design flaws and the like.

No design flaws and the quality is nice and it has top notch geometry in the control system. Ray's Authoratative Helicopter Manual, which is easy to trust since he says so many things that make sense, states that the Raptor is tied with the Bergen for the best collective system. I cannot back this up with my own reasoning because I don't understand it yet.

Consider a Raptor 50 as it costs the same to crash (I suppose 600mm blades are a small amount more than 550mm). Engine and fuel is more but I think the incremental cost of going up a size is less than normal.

Raptor Problems

I only know of one real issue that must be upgraded when building a raptor 30. The tail rotor hub must be upgraded to a solid one peice style hub. The origanal peice is a hub with two long set screws that the grip bearings ride on. I heard of these breaking in flight but build mine stock anyway. Last weekend, both grips broke off the tail as i was hovering the heli about 10 feet off the deck. Luckly i got it down without a scratch as the heli was rotating very fast, but for a begginer, i wouldent recommend such a feat. Replace that peice and you are set.

I would like to see photos of before and after of this mod. I know the little arms that connect from the slider to the tail rotor blades have broke on me 3 times. I tapped the tail and one broke. I CA glued it instead of replacing it, and tapped the tail again, and the glue held!! but the other one broke. I tapped the tail a third time and a glue bond broke. I replaced them with new parts this time. Only one of these breaks led to me not being able to land -- which was a $40 crash including the $25 blades.

I was thinking of getting the aluminum ones just to fix what I see as a weak spot.

The one piece T/R hub is not a bad idea, I have one on my R30 and it works great at $8.50 I guess it's a must have upgrade. I never had a problem with the factory hub but then I kept the tail out of the grass and checked it on a regular basis. Rsilvers the Black plastic yoke you are talking about, they did have a problem with the early one's the plastic used in them was very brittle they now use better stuff.

helihut now has the hubs for $6.50 and the A-Arms for $10. The hub is more important, but get the A-arms too so you can switch to regular links and can adjust the swash to collective lever geometry if you feel the need to do so.

Raptor upgrades are great because they are so cheap. Compare the $25 split gear upgrade to some $150 to upgrade an older XCell to split gear.

The tail rotor hub upgrade is not inclusive of what is being referred to above, that is the yoke and it's ends. I recommend you keep the plastic yoke since when it breaks, it prevents the tail shaft from bending. It too is available in aluminum, but I think no matter what you are still stuck with the plastic links between the yoke and the grips. The yoke is now sold separately for about $1.50

You wont regret getting a Raptor. Worse case senario in a crash is a totally new machine at $240 plus blades (if you dont get cought up in an upgrade frenzy). The only real upgrades needed on the 30 are the engine....I would recomend the OS32, 49 BB kit, blades (for 3D stuff), and a good muffler.
