e-Electric Batteries & Chargers > Can you over-charge with the rate of C/10?

Hi,

I charged my 12 cell GP3300mAh on the Easy charge mode of the "Orbit Microlader" charger, at C/10, .30Amp (300mAh). It put in 3900mA after almost 13 hours, when I stopped it. The pack was only slight warm to touch. I think it would have kept going until the charger stopped at 14 hours (the max length in time). The other pack, I let it go until the timer stopped it at 14 hour and it had put in about 4200mA.

Would it have over-charged the pack or is it possible to over-charge at C/10 rate?

Should I have stopped it charging at 11hours?

Thanks, Hayden.

Most of modern NIMH bateries are design to wistand some overcharge at 1/10C rate. As with any others NIMHs also don't absorb all charged energy and thefore longer time is always needed to charge them even at 1/10.
Energy which is not absorbed by battery is exchanged to heat and due to 1/10 charge this energy is not very high and therfore batteries should ger only slightly warm. As the battery is closer to fully charged state or charged also energy which is not absorbed by battery increase and produce more heat. This is not a "killing" issue at 1/10 while energy is not very high. Nevertheless I recommend do not overcharge them if possible because NIMHs are very sensitive to temperature, which shorten their lifetime.
