Events, Shows and Fun Flys > Can I have my heli checked as baggage?

I'm planning to fly to the Huntsville, AL FunFly next weekend...
With all the heightened security can I still check my helicopter (in it's special carrying box I built and have used twice prior to 9/11) as baggage?

Ironically, I was flying back from Huntsville with my Heli on 9/11! I got stranded in Houston ( I was waiting for a connecting flight when it all happened) and ended up driving a rental car from Houston to San Diego!

That's quite a drive in a rental car! I don't see why you couldn't bring your heli as a check-on. I don't think they have changed the checkon rules much. Just the carry-on rules. I could be wrong, tho.

Absolutely Positively, think purple

Some of those screening people have real power-trip issues. I get to interact with them often enough, and I've nearly been hauled off before I realized that it was a losing battle. I (and one of my employers) would certainly suggest that you ship it ahead of time. That way, you can track it along the way, insure it against damage, and not have to lug it around the terminal. The odds that it will get lost by an adequate shipping company are super slim, and they are just better odds than the chance that the passenger carrier will lose it and the rest of your luggage. Don't chance it, just hire a top notch shipping company and away go troubles down the conveyor belt.

I had a gig for a while delivering the found luggage for an airline. Now, this was in London Ont, not the largest hub of air travel in the world, but there was always luggage coming in, every single day. Often it came in by pairs of suitcases, but it wasn't unusual to have a dozen missing pieces arrive together. Usually the luggage was arriving within a day of it's owner, but two or three days late wasn't that strange.

I shudder to think of what happens behind the scenes at a large, busy airport.

I'd go UPS or Purolator or something similar with anything of value, and anything I needed to arrive on schedule.

jeez

Hi DavidH,

Did those guys say what the reason(s) was for not allowing the heli's?

I though we were just about through with the transportation issue.

Thank you to everyone who has commented on this....

I have contacted the airline (Delta) to ask about checking my heli as baggage. Here's what they have said on the matter...

I explained I wanted to check a radio controlled helicopter as baggage in a case that fits within the standard baggage size restrictions (L+W+H=62"). I also mentioned that I have traveled other times with the heli/case pre 9/11.

The rep said if it went thru before it would still go through...

The problem would come with carrying the transmitter as carry-on baggage. She said some security might pass it, but others may not. She said they may go as far as actually opening up the device to inspect it! She recommended checking it as well. I think that is what I will do.

My plan is to carry my clothes in a large suitcase that is big enought place the whole 9Z tx case inside and cushion it further with my clothes.

I would check the TX for sure. It is a 1 watt TX and could be used to control things remotely. I think they are smart enough to not allow that.

Airlines

I just got off of the phone with Southwest and they said "NO" because it has a internal combustion engine. She said that the regs. wrote by the FAA said that no engines could be shipped unless they were in their orig. package.

She explained that the engine could still have 1 drop of fuel in it or even some oil.

I have taken one on a airline before, but it was before 9-11.

Im just tell you what she told me.

That is a good point. You could UPS the engine. I guess it would be a lost cause to explain that nitro fuel is not explosive. It is like a bottle of wine.

Here we go again....

Here is the Reply from THE DOT! You know the guys that write the Hazmat regs for the FAA.
I flew to Las Vegas with my Sceadu, tx and the field gear neatly packed in a hard sided suitcase I built for traveling.
NO PROBLEMS.
Each airline has it's own regs, but to say that it is HAZMAT they are reading too much into the regs. Now you will notice there is some room for interpetation on these. What is completey purged? To me that means a Gas free certificate and ventilation. Now that is too the extreme. I would figure no visible residue would surfice for the average person.
My wife works for air cargo for a major airline. She used to say the same thing till I showed her this reply. She agrees now that it is not HAZMAT as defined by the DOT and has no problem with letting them go. This used to cause fights with us so this was a pretty big achievment for me.

I would not take the tx on as a carryon item. Just put yourself in the screeners shoes. Big box, lots of switches, dials, compterized parts, wires, big chunk of soild looking stuff that might be a battery.....You get the idea.
At least in the suitcase it will be x-rayed and sniffed so they can be reasonably sure it will not go boom!

Hope some of this helped
Jason

Dear Jason,

We have received your inquiry about the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR; 49 CFR Parts 171-180). The HMR are available at the following URL:

http://hazmat.dot.gov/rules.htm

Model rocket motors are classified as 1.4C or 1.4S, meaning they are classified as explosives. Information on shipping a new explosive can be found in Part 173, Subpart C. If your rocket motor falls under the definition of a 1.4C material it is forbidden aboard passenger carrying aircraft (see § 172.101).

From your description, you call the item an internal combustion engine. If it is an engine for a model plane and does not contain any hazardous material, such as fuel, it is not regulated. You must ensure that the engine and fuel tank are completely purged of all residue and vapors. Information on what constitutes "empty" can be found in § 173.29.

If you require further assistance, our Hazardous Materials Information Center is staffed with regulatory specialists who can quickly answer your questions by phone. Please do not hesitate to call, as the Information Center is open Monday through Friday, 9 am - 5 pm E.S.T. at (800) 467-4922 or (202) 366-4488.

Sincerely,

U.S. DOT

Could you tell me what the regulations are regarding the shipping or transporting as baggage of Radio Control model aircraft onboard a commercial airline? Specifically small internal combustion engines less than 1cu with NO FUEL in the engine or fuel tank.

Thanks
Jason Stiffey

How it all worked out...

Well the Huntsville FunFly is in the history books now...
I WAS able to check my heli as baggage without any question or hassle. When I checked it in at San Diego, I was asked what was in the box. I replied " a model helicopter". Since my case was obviously a custom built box, I was asked to sign a release stating that I wouldn't hold Delta Airlines responsible for any damage to the contents.

I would like to add that of the 3 times I've traveled with my heli using this case, twice was with Delta and once with Continental. Both times Delta took extra care to have a porter take the case the plane instead of using the belt behind the counter at no extra charge. They even let me pick it up from the special oversize luggage pick-up so it doesn't have to suffer the "bump" it gets when it falls onto the luggage carousel in baggage claim. Both times with Delta: NO DAMAGE.

With Continental it was just the opposite. I had no hassle checking it, but when I arrived at my destination the case was cracked and punctured in 3 locations! What's funny is the damage was located right where I had put "Fragile" labels! I can picture some lunatic baggage handler looking at my poor box saying "Fragile!...I give you fragile!" and kicking my box on every fragile sign

When it comes to handling my heli, I'm going to try to stay with Delta.

As far as the transmitter is concerned, I just packed my 9Z, metal case and all, inside my large suitcase with my clothes...No problems at all.

BTW, even though the weather wasn't perfect, the FunFly was a great success!

Jason Krause and Todd Bennett were the consumate professionals...Putting on some awesome demo flights and helping anybody who asked...

Ask Todd about his greatest save ever...He was helping a dude with a Freya...Did a picture perfect auto...WITHOUT COLLECTIVE!!!! The collective servo quit during the flight...fortunately the sticks were in the hands of the right man!

A big thank you to the Huntsville Heli Flyers for their hospitality and a great funfly!
