Has anyone ever heard of someone getting sick in a Helicopter? I had this idea to take my wife to Catalina Island (off CA coast) in a helicopter and she is skeptical cause she thinks she'll get sick. She doesn't get sick in airplanes so I don't think it will be any different. I've never been in a helicopter either so I don't know what to tell her. Does anyone have any experience with this? This is the website of the company that does it : http://www.islandexpress.com/

i just took my girlfriend up for a ride (i was flying) and she was fine until i started doing some banking turns and stuff like that. It can be a lot different than flying in an airplane. I was flying a Bell 47, which you can pretty much see everything outside of the cockpit, which is a little different than being in a jetranger or something like that. Since helicopter manuever much more differently that airplanes do, its a lot easier to get motion sickness in. It not under normal flying conditions but when you start getting into a lot of turns and going up and down, you can get very sick quite quickly. Something like what you want to do shouldnt be to bad, so i think your wife would be fine. perhaps take some montion sickness pills just in case, but it should be a blast. Hope this helps!

I got to ride with the border patroll last weekend. once we reached the patroll area we were going in circles constantly, so it was a little tough on me, but when were were traveling from A to B it was pretty similar to riding in a plane.

If you can find some Bonine (heavy duty dramamine) that will be very good prevention just in case, works a lot better than dramamine. Also be sure to not wear any heavyer of a jacket than is absolutely needed. Being just a littel bit cold helps tremendously.

Its a wonderfull experience. don't let it pass you by.

My wife and I took a helicopter tour of Maui.

The pilot flew deep into a canyon, and we were 200 feet below the top of the waterfalls, it was spectacular.

I personally was a bit worried, there did not appear to be anywhere to do an auto, and it was a single engine helicopter.

The wife seemed to manage ok, but I would suggest you plan ahead, and tell her if she gets startled by air pockets, don't grab the pilots arm while he's trying to fly.

If you get sick on a rollercoaster then deem a heli to be a rollercoaster with no rails...

I hate to admit this, But my first ride on one of these---

I got sick as a dog after 4 hours of crankin' and bankin'. Sitting in the back under the main gear box with all of the heat, the smell of JP-8, and the flashing of 6 blades in the sun just kicked my ass!! But as long as the pilots take it easy your girl should be ok!! I hope you get to go, and have some fun mdntblu!

I have flown with the Dallas Police Department's Air Unit - Must admit, I was worried that I might get sick. All was well even through the abrubt turns and manuvers.

She'll be fine. Eat light, no sooner than 2 hours before your flight, clear liquids 8 hours prior. No milkshakes, coffee. And DON'T make airsickness the number 1 topic on the drive there. Once airborne, keep her attention outside, on the horizon as much as possible. Don't let her close her eyes if she begins to feel queasy.
Used to give rides here in Michigan many moons ago. BTW, those little overhead air vents are called "gaspers", because just before you hurl, you begin to gasp - the vents can preclude that if used enough.

I might not be very good, but I'm fun to watch.

My first ride was tack flying (just above the trees in the Blue Mountains in Sydney) in a Blackhawk (doors open!!). Way cool... didn't get sick (in fact didn't even think about it at the time), just wanted to hang on (especially in those sharp banks..)

You can take sea sick pills prior to flying in any A/C.

Try doing tactical flying at 20 feet following dirt roads in a Porter (PC6) Was great fun but the closest I have ever come to being sick.
Below tree top height in a Kiowa was also lots of fun. The cure to my minor bout of air sickness was stick time on both occassions for 40 minutes :-) that was fun.

To help reduce the onset of air sickness. Try to keep your eyes level with the horizon. Or if you have a nice pilot see if he'll give you a bit of stick time. That works wonders :-)

Well it looks like this is the end of this thread since no one else has posted in a few days. I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who replied. This was very helpful information not only for my wife but for myself as well.
