I spoke with jetcat today and they said that the requirements for the waiver are changing, supposed to be easier to obtain and that the AMA would post it on there site March first. Has anyone heard anything about this.

The new rules are already on the AMA site.

There has been no change to the rules for obtaining the rotary wing turbine waiver.

Waiver

I do not see in the rules the requirement for the ground school, I know it says your post says no changes however i did not see the ground school requirement. Could this be the change?

Gary,

You're right. I didn't notice that ground school is no longer required.

Part of the fixed wing test is that you have to demonstate knowlege of turbine engine operation.

That does not appear to be a requirement for helicopters and control-line pilots. Buddy boxing on a turbine helicopter is not permitted so you still have to do your flight demonstration on a "high performance helicopter (0.60 cu. In. engine size or larger) capable 50 mph forward flight speeds and advanced aerobatics". So, you could get a waiver without knowing anything about starting or operating turbine engines.

You will also see that engines don't need to be approved by the AMA any more.

I spoke with Kim at the AMA and she said as of march 1st no ground school ( that has its good points and bad points) I think the bigest problem where I am is trying to get CD"S to sign off as there are not alot in my area and some don't want to do helis

Gary,

Regarding the TCDs. I would get in as soon as you can. Fixed wing no longer requires a TCD (i.e. someone from the list) for signoff, but you still need them for helicopters.

As you observed, most TCDs are fixed wing people, so I foresee the list getting smaller as time goes by.

You do not need a waiver to buy the engines.

correct : you can buy them without a waiver, you can fly them without a waiver... but you can not fly one at an AMA field or event without a waiver....
