I was out flying tonight and all of a sudden the tail did a very quick 360 on me (so fast I could barely see it). Fortunately I was close to the ground and landed. I checked everything as best I could and just attributed it to a glitch. I took off again and after about 1 minute it did it again (I was still close to the ground just in case it happened again). Well, I stopped flying then since I figure I have a major problem somewhere. I have a JR8103 radio running in PCM mode, Raptor 30, gyro is a JR550t in HH mode, and this may be the problem, a 8417 servo on the tail rotor. I have heard stories about this servo, but the one I have is supposed to have the new motor.

So, is it the servo or the gyro or possibly both, and how do I tell?

I don't dare fly it again until something is done to correct this. Is there a bench test to see where the problem is, or should I send both gyro and servo in to have them looked at?

Start checking all connections (especially servo extensions) are tight, then swap the tail rotor servo. Other things to look for - binding tail rotor linkage, and loose gyro tape.

I have checked all the connections, etc. and everything seems ok. Gyro is not loose, and I have the servo on the tail boom so binding is not an issue.
I have 38 flights on this heli and gyro/servo combination and have not had a problem before. I just recently started to use HH mode all the time and I am wondering if the frame rate is too high for this servo. Unfortunately I do not have another servo to swap it out with (at least not a digital servo like that). I think I just might buy a 8700G and try and see if that solves the problem - I hate tearing the whole thing apart and not flying for possibly 2 weeks.

I had an 8417 with the new motor upgrade and it failed. That was the first sign that it was failing on me. Luckily I got it down. I would realll bet that servo is causing your grief. Send it back to JR or LHS if you bought it there and ask for an 8700G.
